So I've noticed on my new-to-me 2000 that the rear seat cowl sort of pops outwards in the middle section. The rear tab fits fine and the bolt holes line up well, but the middle sort of bows upwards. The tabs are, however, in place.

Is this pretty common? Should I stop whining? Is there some sort of better, pre-painted aftermarket option? What about carbon fiber? (yes, I know it's squidlike, but I'm strangely enamored of carbon fiber. It just looks so nicely organized...)

My '01 with a stock cowl fits fine. Kinda rough up close, but it fits the bike nicely. If all the tabs are good could it be warped?
    How about a pix?
I've seen some a/m units and they are rough -- carbon would be cool, but pricey.
If you go c/f and you want a front fender to match lemme know!!!

Nah, it doesn't look warped. It actually fits well, it's just that there's about a 3-4 mm gap running up along each side (too lazy to get the camera right now).

While we're on the topic, has anyone seen or designed a quick release system for the cowl? I didn't like the long bungee strap Franken-bolts so I replaced them with flush bolts, but I was thinking that some sort of quick release bolt, maybe requiring an Allen key or something, would be awesome. Maybe I'll do some research.

I'd say mine is about the same - 2-3mm gap. Maybe that's just the way it is?!?
