    Hi,
My work is ongoing on my 1998, and I have finally decided to cut the rear fender.
I would appreciate any tips for cutting it down and what to do for license plate lighting.
I want it to obviously look as factory as possible.

Thanks all, and any pics would be much appreciated

Check the CA Vehicle Code for motorcycle plate illumination requirements. CHP looks for that sort of violation. Know the section if you get stopped or popped.

For a "factory" profile of a shortened rear fender, make a template of the stock fender. Best IMO to remove the fender before doing any cutting. Define the line over masking tape. Cut with a fine tooth sawblade made for plastic. Take your time as to not generate heat. ABS plastic can be dressed with sponge sanding blocks. Best IMO, are the ones by 3M.

And that, BB, is the way to lose your troll status! I'd rate that at least a 9 out of 10 on the helpful scale (for a solid 10 you have to include a picture)!

What weather will you ride in. If you ride in the rain, and you cut off too much, you will get very dirty. I cut mine albeit it is a 6th gen. I wished I had not. But if you are a fair weather rider, I guess all you need to worry about is the LP light and maybe reflectors, depending on your local regs.

For those curious in another look at a 5th gen tail. This was all ready done like this, original owner did a good job IMO. if you didn't know any different, one would say it came this way from the factory, but we know better huh ;)

I was thinking of simply cutting the fender in line with the bottom of the rego plate and trimming the sides to match. But this pic has me thinking. Options options:smile-new:

I did the mod on my 4th gen, it was pretty straight forward. When I got this VFR I saw that it had been done all ready, Thought ok that was a nice touch, it wasn't until I got back and really looked it over more that it was done very well. I'm not worried about the regs here, doubt any po po would notice unless they know the bike real well. it lights up just fine from the taillight as it is. if by chance you need another photo showing what ever, drop me a note.
