hi, i have an 84 vf500 interceptor. it sat out side for a couple on moths unfortunately, and now the back caliper is sticking and wont fully release. it seem to have some surface rust on the pistons. my first question is can i soak the caliper in wd-40 or something of that nature, or do i need to re place the caliper. budget is an issue but i still want to be safe. just looking for a little direction.

    thanks

    jay

Some think WD-40 can damage the caliper seals by causing swelling. i dunno and think it's OK.

You could try using it......or just try removing pads, using the brake pedal to push both pistons out about 3/4 of the way, then clean them up with green scotchbrite pad, then using brake fluid as lube push them back in using a large C-clamp, being sure not to get them cocked sideways.

After you have them back in place, repeat the in-out process a few times, and that should help, if not fix the problem. Might be good to replace the brake fluid too. Keep any fluid away from pads.

Clean caliper body and the 2 pins that locate the pads.

Also VERY important to clean and grease the 2 large pins that the caliper slides on !!!

I'D avoid the PB cuz it seems stronger than WD.

If you notice the pistons sliding out easier after 2 or 3 in-outs, it's probably fixed.........for now.
