Forgive my ignorance but I just took off my rear wheel to get a new tire (the bike has about 14k miles on it) and was surprised to find my rear brake pads look pretty worn. However, I am not really sure how much is on them when they are new, I know rear brake pads are usually thinner than the front, but these look pretty low.

    Here is a picture: http://i.imgur.com/DvlA7FR.jpg

My attempt to get the back pad (cant really see it but you can kind of make out the gap): http://i.imgur.com/Xp5asMg.jpg

The rotor incase it matters (I assume that is antisieze on the studs, looks like it): http://i.imgur.com/o9lcXHJ.jpg

So do I need rear pads? 14k miles seems low to me to already need rear pads. I havent gotten a good look at the front yet, I am going to check them nezt.

If I do infact need pads, can someone recommend a really nice high quality set for our bike?

    THANKS.

Your disc is in better shape than mine, if you do decide to replace it can I have it ?
They all look good , ride it and don't worry about it for another 14k

To answer your brake pad question, seems a majority have gone to EBC HH pads, myself included.

I too have HH pads. Much more stopping power. Be careful the forest few times you clamp down on them. They bite harder and you may lock a wheel.

Thanks guys, wont replace the pads yet based on your feedback.

Oddly, when I put the rear wheel back on and rode after it, the brakes seem weird. Now I am sure it cant be the new tire or taking the wheel on/off because that seems wouldnt affect the brake system at all. Probably a coincidence. All of a sudden my brakes seem weird. They seem to have less give in the lever than before, like the lever used to move more before and be a little more spongy (but in a good way). Now the brakes feel stange when I apply them, any ideas what could be going on with this? (perhaps it's in my head)

When you put on the wheel the brake pads were not positioned properly, and they were BOTH forced onto one side of the disc. Look carefully: one side of the rotor is contacting the brake pistons while both pads are crowded on the other side. Very dangerous, so fixit !!!!

I took the rear wheel on and off, not the front. I dont see how what you are saying is possible on the rear wheel.

it is not possible on the rear, as the rotor is attached to the hub

Is it me or can someone explain? I am currently in the market for rear brakes as well. When I look at this picture, looks to me like there may be only 2mm left which would indicate time for new pads. I have circled in red what I am referring to. Also, looks like the pad may be down to the wear marks too. How do I seem to be looking at this wrong when everyone else saying they are okay. Thanks for the help. Just trying to understand.
