    I know people use washers to shim the needle up on v4's, never saw actual shims before though.

    Just regular washers from the hardware store. I use the same. The ones I use are .020 thick. The older carbs with grooves cut in to the needles and use a snap clip are .040 apart. So the .020 gives a little finer adjustment for A/F ratio. You can get 3 or 4, I forget, washers only before the twist lock won't fit.
