I just purchased a 87 vfr 700 and while riding i noticed my temp gauge climbing. i ride home open the radiator and i find oily gunk on the cap. is this normal? and if not what kind of radiator fluid do i use or what problems might i be having?

    thanks,
    newbie

Um, does not sound good. Seems engine oil is getting into you cooling system from a possible bad headgasket ...... Rebuild or replacement time.

Usually with a head gasket it goes the other way, coolant into the oil. I'd change the oil right away, and look closely at the oil that comes out. If it's at all milky looking, that would be confirmation of head gasket issues.

thanks, for the info. I think the previous owner was a serious neglecter(if thats a word.) i went ahead and drain the tank, flush it out, cleaned the res. tank and took it for a spin. it seems to be running cooler. Well see tomorrow around 400 pm.
