I kinda hijacked another thread with this question, so thought I'd just start a new one to give him back his thread.

I have read on so many threads, so much info about the R/R issue on Viffers that I am totally confused now.

On many threads (here and VFRD) I have seen comparison pictures of R/R's; on older OEM (with small fins), a newer OEM (with larger fins), and aftermarket (also with larger fins). On those threads people mention the newer OEM R/R was for a "recall", and at some point became production on the bikes; however, I can't seem to nail down which year this newer OEM part became production.

In addition, people all seem to agree that there are other issues that impact the R/R, including the wires being too small of gauge. So, that replacing just the R/R won't guarantee you've addressed the issue. Many have recommended an aftermarket wire harness and R/R; however just as many say they aren't all they cracked up to be. Others have also recommended putting a computer CPU fan on the R/R.

So, I went out and decided to look for the recall notice, thinking that might clear it up for me... I cannot find a recall notice for the R/R. The only electrical recall notice I found was below:

    Recall ID #27884 - ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
    Recall Date AUG 15, 2007
    Component ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
Potential Motorcycles Affected 6952 Recall Details
    Recall Date AUG 15, 2007
    Motorcycle Affected 2005-2002 HONDA VFR800

    Summary
ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE FRONT FAIRING SUB-HARNESS (SECTION OF THE WIRING HARNESS) TRANSFERS THE ELECTRICAL GROUNDING LOAD OF THE HEADLIGHTS, FRONT TURN SIGNALS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, AND VARIOUS RELAYS TO THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS VIA AN 18-PIN CONNECTOR. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THE GROUND WIRE TERMINALS INSIDE THE CONNECTOR CAN OVERHEAT, RESULTING IN MELTING OF THE CONNECTOR AND A LOSS OF POWER TO VARIOUS CIRCUITS.

    Consequence
AS A RESULT, A LOSS OF CRITICAL LIGHTING OR ENGINE POWER COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH.

    Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RE-DESIGNED SUB-HARNESS. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND, THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS WILL ALSO BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM LETTER WAS MAILED TO OWNERS ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2007. OWNERS WERE RE-NOTIFIED ON NOVEMBER 10, 2007, TO TAKE THEIR MOTORCYCLES TO DEALERS TO HAVE THE PARTS INSTALLED. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-866-784-1870.

    Potential Motorcycles Affected
    6952

    Notes
    HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)

DOES ANYONE have DEFINITIVE info on this issue?

From the 2006 model year, the above issue is fixed, yes?

If there is a "newer" OEM R/R, with bigger fins, what model year did that go into the production bikes?

Does just having the "newer" OEM R/R 'fix' the problem?

Is there a model year that from that point going forward HAS NOT had R/R issues?
