If i were to purchase an 86 or 87 VFR 700 - how difficult is it to get parts (new and old). for example, I want to purchase a brand new seat for the pearl white VFR. Probably a stupid question...but can you still buy new parts or is all used off e bay, forums and craig's list. thanks for your help.

I think it is a crap shoot as to what you can get new, I have been surprised as to what can still be purchased new. The 86 seat was a different and nicer color material than the 87 seat, just thought I would mention that.

Try to get the part number then search, I've found a few new items at good prices that way.

For the Seat? I doubt it.

    I'd start looking on Ebay.

Depends on what you are trying to buy, a lot of body parts are mostly unobtanium, trolling Feebay might yield some results for what you are looking for.

CMSNL.com, David Silver Spares and your local Honda dealer are worth trying for other parts.

You'd be surprised as to what you can still get new from Honda. I've got 3 of these older bikes and so far the 1000R was the only one that had a discontinued part through Honda that I couldn't get - not including the bodywork. I've never had a problem getting parts for the 500 or 750. Even some of the bodywork is still available. For anything you can't get from Honda, there is eBay and aftermarket companies to fill in the gaps.

one thing that has been mentioned in previous threads, is that honda seems to like to change the part number for identical parts that are used on different bikes
