My dream has come true! I finally got a 5th Gen VFR! 2001 with 10K! My only other bike has been a 1983 Honda Sabre....little bit different, but I loved that bike. 15 miles in a little over 2 years on it. I got the bike, and I'm realizing that I'm not too confident everything is as it should be. I had a few questions and wanted to bounce them off you guys so that I can feel a little more confident in my bike. 1) I have a power commander on the bike, which I know zero about. I noticed it read all the way lean all across the board. Decided to throw on the map for the micron slip-on (which is what was on it) and stock/KNN filter. The map ran like junk. My exhaust was sputtering and gurgling, power was weak, and there seemed to be a lot of surging. I looked around a little bit, realized Cosey's map was only for VTECH models and then saw a post about a guy liking another map :-/ ah cant' remember right now and the map's on my other computer and I cant find the name anymore. It was for a diff exhaust, but it seems to work very smoothly, but it lifted my power band a bit higher than it was originally. I'm getting only 35mpgs but I'll do my first highway test tomorrow. 2) When I let off the clutch in nuetral, I seems as if I can feel and hear the clutch just barely engaging and scraping. 3) Never had fuel injection before, but I thought one of the main benefits was to be able to turn it on and goose away within a couple seconds (i know it's always good to let the bike warm up a little of course). When I turn mine on, given it's been anywhere from 50's to high 30's the last week, it has no power for the first couple minutes. Just checkin to see if that's normal. Thanks guys! Sorry the questions are long, wanted to be thorough. -David
#1 the only real way to get precise is to go to a certified Dynojet center and have a custom map made based on your bike/config. Usually about $150-200 #2 sounds like you need to blees your clucth line/replace fluid. the air in it is not allowing full disengagement #3 normal, the FI will "choke" the bike (enrich the circuit) until the bike comes up to operating temperature. normal. Operating temperature is in the 165 degree + range
In a nutshell, a power commander overrides the stock ECU's fuel to air mixture and determines how much juice the bike is going to get at a specific RPM. I would get a dyno tune for your PCIII. I know that some guys are ok with generic maps, and that's fine, but the generics have a funny way of making the bike run less than great when compared to a custom dynoed map. In fact my bike ran much worse than stock after I installed my exhaust/PCIII and put a generic map on it. I ended up disconnecting the PCIII untill I was able to get the bike on a dyno. A sparking/popping exaust can be a sign of too lean a mixture. A thick sounding sputter coupled with a fuel scent in the exhaust is usually a sign of running too rich. If you were to take identical bikes with identical mods and run a generic on one and a custom on the other you would easily notice the benefits of a dyno tune. It's money well spent. The 35 mpg you're getting is normal, so no worries there. Betarace could very well be correct in his clutch assesment, but I know that on 6 gens there is a similar, ever so slight sound to what your experiencing when the bike is in nuetral and the clutch lever is fully out. Totaly normal according to my mechanic. If it's slipping while riding, then something is definately wrong. The enrichment circuit acts as a sort of choke when the bike is cold, so what you're experiencing is normal, I wouldn't however, make a habit of just jumping on and going. At a minimum, it's best to let it warm up to a point were the "choke" is no longer operating (105f) and the RPM's have dropped to the normal idle speed, hotter then that if you can.
