I'm in the process of removing the engine from the frame of my '84 VF700F. One of the steps in the Clymer says to remove the alternator. I got the cover and gasket off but then it says to not remove the rotor without a special "puller". Where can I find this tool and what size do I need? On a side note, are there any methods of removing the engine by myself? I'm on summer break from college and don't have any guy friends at home to help me. Anything I can rig up to aid me in the process? Thanks! -Lucas
Don't take this as gospel, but i removed a rotor once by removing the bolt and placing a ball bearing (appropriately sized) in the hole, then tightening the bolt until the rotor came off, using the bolt itself as a puller!!!!! You could use pennies or dimes for less than 25 cents to put in the hole too. Be careful not to drop the rotor because mechanical shocks can disrupt the magnetism Engine removal should be a two-person job or you risk damage to the bike or yourself.....
Take a trip to harbor freight. They're fairly universal I think, but my experience is limited to pulling the flywheel off my old jet skis. Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
got it I literally just removed my engine from my 85 vf700f yesterday. For removal, I did not have to remove the alternator. If you drop the subframe and have 2 people hold the engine up while you undo the motor mounts, you can position the engine to drop right out. If you do not have an extra person or 2, you a car jack with a 2x4 on it to balance the motor as you lower it out. An extra hand would help alot.
I remember reading that part of the Clymer's too when I was removing the motor out of my VF500F. I got the alternator cover off when I asked myself "why?" and proceeded to take it out with the help of a friend.
