From time to time I seem to hit a false neutral on my bike. If I purchase this kit, will I eliminate it from happening? Are there any downsides to installing the kit? Does it improve around town shifting as well as they say? Considering I'm a novice, do I just need to work on shifting, or will this purchase be of signifigance down the road as well? I have heard good things about this shift kit - its on my to do list. I occasionally hit a false nuetral between 5th and 6th. It happens mostly when I am not paying enuff attension to my shift. But also since you are a newbie yes, you need to work on shifting techique too. MD
I'd say that you need to work on shifting a bit. I could think of better ways to spend $200. I have hit a false neutral between 4th and 5th a couple times. But mainly work on making sure you "fully" push/pull the shifter into the gears. After awhile, it will become seemless and smooth. I have about 8k miles in the saddle of my vfr.
I put one on my bike and it is a much better design if you buy the wheel and the star kit. I put it on because I was having a hard time getting it into 1st. It did improve the shifting. Only reason I did it is because I found it new on ebay for $125.00
I put this on my 5th gen, now it is a little more loud with a "clack" and shifting is more precise by validating each gear. (sorry for my bad english)
Hi Seattle; The first thing I would do is change engine oil, I have had very good luck with Red Line synthetic motorcycle oil,it comes in a black container and has a tin foil type label . The oil is critical when it comes to gear changing. Maybe that shift kit that you mentioned is a good product, but I believe its best to first change the oil. eddie
Pro Shift Kit Hi Seattle, Eddie Cap is correct in saying engine oil is most important for shifting smoothly and engine/trans longevity. I always use the best synthetic grade oil and change more often than Honda recommends. My '06 VFR & '79 CBX live in the PNW and function exceptionally smooth. Heres to safe riding! Doug
I have a Factory Pro in the Hawk GT. It IS NOT possible to miss shifts now. Since it now takes pretty good shove to get the lever to move, if the lever moves, it IS going into the next gear or neutral. As a result, I am very happy with the shifting on the Hawk. If my VFR had any issues with shifting at all, I would not hesitate to install the Factory Pro unit. KC-10 FE out... lane: :usa2:
The kit is good and worth taking a look at. I know the guy who designed and manufactured the kits and he is a very sharp guy. They have worked wonders for many people. The kits are highly rated by many AFM racers and will cure most false neutral conditions you may be experiencing (other than poor technique). Give Factory Pro a call and explain the problems you are having and see what they recommend. These folks know what the hell they are talking about.
