I am thinking about stripping the frame on my 84 VF500F. I have some questions on the merits of powder coating vs painting. I have heard that powder coating ends up thicker than paint. Is this an issue on the removable section of the frame? I have to tap the rail out of the upper mounting point because of the snug fit and am concerned that a thicker coating is gonna make near impossible to reassemble without damaging the finish.

    TIA,

powder coating is definetly thicker, but much, much more durable. As far as fitment on reassm. it will be as good as the prep on the frame. If you cap all the threaded holes you won't have issues w/ threads; if you tape off raised mounting boss flanges you won't have issues there. basically anywhere you don't want it plug or mask it. Using high temp tape & high temp silicon plugs. You may have to do this yourself, or take to some who specializes in doing bikes & custom work. Your average assembly line operation will just clean, shoot it & bake it.
