Well as some may know I recently swapped the motor of my bike to a 2005 engine with around 11k miles on it. Today I noticed a ticking sound when revving the motor quickly and then letting it come back down to idle. Sometimes it will persist for 2 or 3 clicks at idle but always goes away. This sounds like CCTs to me but at only 12k miles now is that unusual? If it is an unusual failure should I only replace the front one, which is the one that has failed.

Are manual cam chain tensioners a solution such as this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MANUAL-CAM-...-INTERCEPTOR-VFR-800-03-04-2003-/380458202913 ?

    sounds a bit unlikely.

Sometimes a loose or poorly sealed header will make similar noises. had it happen to me on a small block chevy as well as my VFR. Only on the chevy, it sounded more like a knock.

Forgot to mention I can feel the sound in the grips. Really doubt it's header bolts.

Checked the headers, no loose bolts there. It is the CCTs for sure. Gonna order manual ones later tonight and be done with it.

New manual tensioners are here. How much of an oily mess should I expect when removing the old CCTs?

It was the CCTs. I just spent 5 hours replacing them with manual ones and now the bike runs super smooth. I spent a good 3 hours trying to fish one of the CCT caps out of the motor... exactly the same amount of time it would have taken to remove the Throttlebodies which would have saved me the hassle of it falling in there in the first place. Used a strong magnet wrapped in electrical tape with wound electrical tape as rope, WAS SO FUN...

Hmmm you sure that engine only had 11k on it?

I've never heard of them being an issue on a low mileage motor like that.

No way to be sure obviously. It was only the front CCT which wasn't extending all the way, got jammed or something. When I do the valves I will replace the cam chains with new just for my own peace of mind.
