Pop Quiz, Hot Shot...name this part!

Okay lads...I received a small box of parts from a 2002 donor-bike. I haven't come across one of these before and am not even sure if it's from a VFR. Does anyone have an educated guess (previous answers include: "the Everlasting Gobstopper", Flugel-binder" and "That one thing that goes into the other thing"....)

 

Without seeing the back.... Sure looks like the fitting that engages the counter shaft bolt head and drives the speedo gear housing mounted to the cover. ???
