Just finished watching the late news and saw a very disturbing story.

    Full story link abc7chicago.com: ABC7 Chicago WLS-TV 7

Saturday evening around 5:45 pm at Rt. 12 and Old McHenry road just northwest of Chicago, Anita Zaffke had just stopped her Honda Shadow at the red light and was struck from behind by 48 year old Laura Hunt.

Anita later died at Waukegan Hospital of her injuries. Police noted that she was wearing her helmet, no mention of other gear.

Laura Hunt was initially ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident pending further investigation and toxicology reports.

Here,s the the kicker. Police said Laura Hunt admitted she was DOING HER NAILS at the time of the accident.,,

See the link above for the full story and ABC News Video

that sucks!!! that could have happened to any of us riders. a lot of cagers are just plain stupid and hide in their excuse that they DIDN'T SEE the motorcyclist. sure, she didn't see the motorcyclist but she could clearly see how well her nails got painted!

Felt sick reading that, the driver needs to be charged with manslaughter and jailed a minimum of 2 years. With press coverage and a subsequent
Police crackdown on people driving stupidly with undue care ( doing their nails, hair, reading a book etc ) hopefully this kind of totally unnecessary loss of life will not happen again.

"At this point, she is really distressed. There are some things she remembers and some things she doesn't. She is distraught over this," says her lawyer. I guess she must have broke a nail in the crash.

5 minutes. Just give me 5 minutes alone with her.

Big enough story that it is on the news here this morning in Arizona.

They need to make that driver the poster child for stupidity while driving.

Well...I was having a good day until I read this... too sad.

I agree they need to charge the driver with the maximum. Reckless driving, Failure to stop, and Vehicular Manslaughter sums it up if you ask me. 2 years minimum jail time sounds good to me with another minimum 1 year license suspension. I would feel different if she had been paying attention...but doing your nails while driving seems like a blatant disregard for the safety of others if I ever heard of one.

I would like 10 years on each count and lifetime loss of license. It's WAY past enough here! Before, we had to watch out for plain old stupidity but at least they were looking to cover thier own asses, now they're just too fucking stupid to think about even that until after the crash. Given the level of selfish, don't give a shit fucking stupidity on their part my preferred response would be to have rear mounted RPGs set to proximity autofire. That would get the fucking cagers' attention real quick. Barring that, I'm installing a Custom Dynamics LED bar in the back, a Knight Rider type, it can run sequential left-right-left as a running light then flash 6 times and go solid when I apply the brakes. I'm thinking of setting it up to run sequentially only on brakes.

I would have arrested her sorry ass and charged her with Criminal Negligence Causing Death. Before her release, I would pull her nails out and scrape the root so that they would not grow back in. I call this Crime Prevention. No anesthesia of course.

If she gets 5 years she will probably only serve half of that time.

She needs to serve a full 5 years in the gray-bar hotel, nothing less.

I was hit from the rear one time, but very slowly.

The clown behind me had dropped his cassette tape on the floor and

was retrieving it, ended up idling into me. Only broke the taillight but I was pissed.

My wife was even more pissed than me.............it was her bike.

I was tempted to pinch his frickin head off!

    Carry On ~

5 years. The asshole is doing her nails while driving, made a deliberate decision that murdered someone and 5 fucking years is all she'll get?!! That is so TOTAL BULLSHIT! I'm should her lawyer will push for probation, the guilt of what happened is punishment enough and so on, assuming the "accident" is one of the "things she remembers." It's not just stupidity, it's not accidental, it's self-centered assholes who care nothing for anyone else making the deliberate choice: fuck everybody else.

Last week, I had a cager bitch in front of me drifting because she had her visor down, using it's mirror to do her hair. I blasted her with the horn (139db Sterbel) but she just kept on. I even pulled alongside and yelled "drive now, hair later", only to be ignored. After nearly drifting into a minivan she came to a stop light where I reached in her window, ripped the visor clean off, bent it til the mirror shattered out of the frame, gave it back and told her to drive her "Goddamn car and let someone with a fucking clue" do her hair.

    I have had enough.

    I think I like you.

Question about the horn. Is there any issue with it drawing too much amperage? I also wear heated vest and sometimes pant liners in the winter

According to my on-board voltmeter, a blast longer than, say, a second can pull the voltage into the yellow (12.7-12.8v), even at good RPMs (+3500), but it recovers into the green almost instantly. I don't know what kind of draw your gear has but if my VFR's fan is running, the voltage is 12.7-12.8 at best, usually into the red (12.1-12.6v) and the horn will drop it under 12. IMO, the Sterbel horn is absolutely worth it, it has saved my ass several times...

You're not lying. I always pull up to a stop with an exit strategy. Keep your eyes on your ass at least till the first cage stops behind you. I've been teaching my son that method when he is on the seat with me. Ride safe. Dave

Sad to see one so close to home, I live not too far from there.

I think that serving a full 5 year sentence would be almost sufficient, though the likely-hood of her serving the whole thing is questionable.
