Hey everyone. I've been thinking about playing with the sprockets on my '86 700. Basically I was thinking I could tweak the sprockets to just give me a little more acceleration. I realize this will compromise my top end speed and rpm's while cruising. But I thought a couple teeth on the wheel gear would help a little and not hurt much. What are the sprockets on a stock VFR700 and has anyone played with them and found a really sweet setup already? Also, where does someone find sprockets for this?

SPROCKET SPECIALISTS-Sprockets for all makes of bikes.

This is where I ended up getting my rear sprocket from for my 98 VFR800. I went from the stock 17/43 to 17/45. There's not a ton of high end loss(top speed) and the low end pep/response (...quick acceleration) is nice.

Just remember that any gearing changes will throw off your speedo, and one way to fix this is to get a speed healer.

Sprocket Specialists is the best place to go for sure. They are reasonably priced and have a section that will tell you what your stock set up should be. They however did have the wrong info on my 02 VFR front sprocket. They said the stock was a 17 tooth and it actually is a 16 tooth, I verified this with a local Honda dealer. I did inform them at Sprocket Specialists about the typo, and they said they would let the correct people know about it. I ended up just changing the front sprocket & going down 2 teeth on it because I wanted a drastic change on my bike, & I got it with that!:party2:

Read again about the vehicle he's talking about.... its a 1986 VFR700... and I know for a FACT that changing the gear ratio won't do anything. The speedo is cable driven off the front wheel. How can changing the rear sprocket change the speedo thats driven off the front tire? It doesn't.

On later models the speedo was moved to be driven off the engine, so it would change the speed. Apparently your 12 years newer bike (1998) is not driven off the wheel like the 1986. The 1986 won't have any issue with it, unless you change the tire size.

No, no...I suggest Spacely's Sprockets...stay away from the owner though, he is a hothead...ask for George Jetson. (And his wife Jane is a hottie!)

Sorry! Couldn't resist! I watched way too much TV in the sixties.
