This shit about Nailer's family getting whacked by a drunk has me pissed, and I'm sure we all are.
Is there a legal/ legislative group that anyone here is involved with? There are plenty of special interest groups who have legislations to protect them...why don't we? There are tons of local laws making it tougher on squids, how about we turn the tables and get tougher laws for people killing/injuring bikers(of all types). I would like to see some numbers to show how many bike crashes are caused by cagers. We all ride like everyone is out to kill us. this is not paranoia, it is nearly fact.
There have to be millions of bikers in the U.S. alone. We can make some noise and get tougher penalties for inattentive driving resulting in injury/death of a biker.

If there are already groups like this, let's hear about them.

I feel it should be a case of Pre-meditated Atempted Vehicular Man Slauter. The ass monkey went to the bar to ... DRINK then on his own will decided to drive after consuming an intoxicating amount of alcohal. Case closed put the pos out to dry.

The AMA is working on some equal rights and rulings program. It has taken off in a few states but it needs federal backing. There are several of these ideas from state to state but nothing on a national level. Blue Ribbon Coalition also helps to some degree with street bike cases, though I belive they focus more on the off highway issues.

All points above are from my scewed memory and could be completely wrong. Also, my spelling sucks and I know this.

I just looked up the Blue Ribbon Coalition and they appear to be in league with the environmentalists. Their policies mostly pertain to off road vehicles. Anyone here a member of AMA?

I am a memeber of AMA and have been for several years. I used to race desert class in Souther California and Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC) sponsored some of the races.

There are some motorcycle specific Lawyer and Antorny offices. I used to see commericals for them all the time on the west coast.

Does the AMA have petitions or lobbyists for this sort of thing?

yeah, I am a card carrying member of the AMA for this reason and other reasons. it is one of the only agencies interested in our rights... I do not mind paying my $40 a year at all... I even use the discount occasionally for a rentacar or the like...

ABATE is a big motorcycle rights group, but their primary mission is the right not to wear helmets. They do like to go after this sort of thing, though.

It seems crazy with the amount of lobbyists and politicians backing stupid and useless causes that we would not have some serious support for such a righteous and worthy cause.

To tell you the truth, a good start might be founding a website "Equal Rights for Two Wheeled Transport" or something, getting a strong member base, and then using that member base to send petitions to lawmaking bodies. If we can show enough interest in a cause, we can get somewhere. These greedy m-er f-ers in office just pay attention to voting numbers, so we could make them see that we are a strong enough fraction of the public to warrant attention.

It could work, but I don't know how to make a website, I do know how to buy and register domain names, but that is it. I do know though that these petition and special interest websites do sometimes get results...

Or even just one person in every state could contact a local representative with a petition for a proposal for legislation. I bet the AMA could help with contact info and wording and numbers of signatures needed, etc. Like I said, I'll have to look into this.

AMA sold the rights to the Daytona 200 in part, according to what I heard on the interview with their current President/CEO type, to focus on the type of stuff Drewl is looking into. AMA is pro motorcycle, and they would be the place I'd start... they do have lobbists and the lobby likes to say how many members they represent - especially from the states/districts the lawman they are lobbying is from.

A lobbyist owns the house next to me... but lives in DC and uses it as a weekend get away. I'll ask him what he knows when he's down in nicer weather.

1st - Join the AMA, because this is what they do very well.
2nd - use the AMA & there tools/information, & become active yourself by contacting local & nat'l polititions from your area that you can get from the AMA.
3rd - just by joining the AMA you help by adding to there numbers of members as a useful tool in local & nat'l gov, because one thing polititions notice is #'s & a high # organization is hard to avoid, & not listen to

I just joined the AMA. I was serious about this. They even have a voluntary 10 dollar donation to the legal fund. In honor of Nailer's family, I donated.
The yearly membership is 39 buck before the donation. Not bad. The web site (ama-cycle.org) has links to local laws and what they are doing to change them.
I will be reading quite a bit. Anyone interested in what I find, just ask, or even better-join.
