but I noticed its not starting anymore very good when it does start its realy hard to start and its idle is rough.

Perhaps the carbs should be cleaned. I havent owned a bike in so many years I am a noob all over again. what should I do with this bike??:chaingun:

First, drain and clean the fuel tank. Next, check battery voltage and recharge if less than about 12.5 volts, then check charging voltage at 5000 rpm. Look for a fat blue spark on all 4 plugs while the engine is cranking over on the starter.

Your carbs probably do need cleaning, but verify sparks first.:hss::redface:

Are you sure the battery doesn't just need to be charged, or replaced? If you have jumper cables, try jump starting it from a car, but make sure the car is not running. (I hear that would provide too much current)

yeah turns out the battery is dead now. i tried to push start it too much failed every time.
would a bad batter effect idle and possiblly cuase the bike to shut off?

You need to do as Squirrel suggested aboot the charging system, low system voltage will cause the bike to idle poorly and want to die.

Between the two battery terminals, namely the Positive (+) and the Negative (-), easy enough ?? One on the left, the other at the battery's right side after you remove the seat of course.

IMO no rinky-dinky milliamp trickle charger will rechagarge your dead battery proppaly. Instead, you need between 1 and 2 amps of charging power for between 8-10 hours.

Things most riders don't know with their first bike: you need to have a 1 amp battery charger, accurate tire gauge, powered air pump for the tires, multimeter, tools. Motorcycle ownership without these essentials won't be easy.

Factory service manual is mandatoy reading.

    *Update*

I put it on the charger till it said charged started it up with choke let it warm up for a few mins slowly put the choke down, sprayed some seafoam carb cleaner in the intake and gas tank. and ran the shit out of that old gas. and it ran good its cold her so if the choke is too low it dies. so next I plan to check all the choke lines/ vacuum lines and clean the carbs out really good and I assume it should be running good. I still plan to check the charging system and battery as I believe the battery is bad since its so old and drains so quickly. would have done it tonight but I found my multimeter chewed by my dog haha. thanks Squirrelman your advice was ideal. You and Toecutter have trully earned your titles as Guru's. :):chaingun:

I can't help you about '87 Cali bikes. But I'm sure someone here will be able to explain.

Go to Yuasa Batteries, Inc. and click on "Tech Manual". It is about 25 pages on everything you ever wanted to know about batteries. This will teach you what to do about checking and charging your battery.

Take your time with this bike, it will be worth every minute! Don't worry about asking questions. We all have to learn somewhere and all the goofy people on this forum love to help and want to see you succeed!

California bikes have a bit of crap caked on them, you have a set of metal lines from the front head that run to a Kunooter valve assembly, some vacuum lines and a charcoal canister....AKA California emissions. It is best to remove it in my opinion because the age of the vacuum lines. Most I have worked on have had cracked lines due to age and heat. You can pretty much remove and pitch all in the trash can and cap off the tubes where they go into the head, cap 5 small ports on the carbs, cap 1 large port on the air box, route small vent line from front of tank down to bottom of bike with battery and over flow lines, and where the float bowl vent was hooked up to that goofy little control valve just unplug and leave open to atmosphere. Aboot a 2 beer job. When you get this bike sorted oot it should not be cold blooded at all.
