Has anyone ever done a check on the accuracy of the VFR's panel display of ambient temperature? It seems when mine is set to show ambient temperature, it is 5-7 degrees too high.

    When moving?
    2 things to note.

    1) when not miving the bike radiates heat.
    2) roads are warmer than the surrounding area because they are black and heated by cars traveling on them.

It should be fairly close. i use it mainly to tell me when i should be looking for ice..

Mine's usually within 2 degrees of what everything else says. My GPS has a digital thermometer and it reads about the same when its in my tank bag (exception - stopped in traffic for the reasons listed above).

I think mine reads high sitting in the sun but usually about 5-6 degrees low when moving. I always figured there must be a "wind chill factor".

Don't know the exact amount, but I know there is some error. Even in cars I have owned, and driven...sometimes the temp would be way off what it really was. Hard to get a correc temp reading at speed I think.

I may be corrected but wind chill is not measured on a thermometer. it is a calculated temperature.

I'm with Molsan here. I depend on mine cause I ride year round here and most times just at about the time of day that Black Ice sets up. I believe it to be faily accurate. Some day maybe I will test it just to find out for sure, but it has been a fine indicator for me.

With respect to Molsan's question, I'm interested in knowing the actual ambient air temperature when the bike is moving. A sensor should read the actual ambient temperature when the bike is moving; this temperature should be reflective of the actual air temperature, not "wind chill" (Wind chill is the apparent temperature felt on exposed skin, which is a function of the air temperature and wind speed). I understand it may read hotter when reading the temperature when the bike is not moving and the engine is running. Thanks for the replies, sounds like no one actually has performed an experiment and knows with data except possibly Action. Guess I'll have to try an experiment sometime.

Aye wind chill does not factor in at all.

But i think many underestimate how much warmer roads are than the surrounding area. there is a reson the snow melts off them faster.
I would be intrested to hear what you find out though.
