This might be a dumb question, but these pads are confusing me.

    THE DETAILS:
2003 VFR. Front pads squeak everytime they are applied. They got well used during the last two track days.

Upon removal for inspection, i see that each pad has 4 smaller pads on each. Each one of those has grooves in it. These pads are worn to the base of those grooves. But there is still probrably 3/16" left of pad material (although its glazed)

    THE QUESTION:
Is this Honda's idea of a "wear to" point ? Seems like there is pleanty of pad left, but the surface area is going to double after this point.

Please chime in with your thoughts and experience.

The squeak you hear is most likely due to a lack of lube (grease) between the back of the pads and the pistons in the calipers. They may have been hot enough on your track day to cook the grease off the back of the pads. You can remove the pads and put brake pad lube (sold at any auto parts store) on the metal back of the pads, then reinstall them. But, if you're going to all of the trouble to take it all apart you might as well replace the pads. Just use a SMALL amount of the lube on the new pads. According to Clymer, the grooves are wear grooves. If they are worn to where the grooves are gone, replace them.

groves are there as wear detectors, if they are gone, replace
squeek could be from a missing spring clip too
but pads are pretty cheap, it is the work to get to them that is costly, so like stated above, you might as well replace them
better early, than, well replacing the whole bike after you don't quite stop one day

I agree with spike. If the grooves are gone, the pads should be replaced. I replaced the rear pads on mine with EBC pads. They felt different than OEM. It seemed like I had less feel for the brake with them, but then it may just have been me since this was teh first time I had used EBC pads.

Thank you gentleman, I just ordered up some new pads. I've never seen a pad designed like that so this was a new one for me.

if you are in a hurry, I have a set of EBC HH that you can put on and trade when you get the new ones. I was goint to change mine, but they are okay right now since I hardly use brakes. ;)
