It looks like my clutch is losing fluid. I can't see any leaks but assume it is leaking into the sprocket area. Are there any major pitfalls I should watch out for and are there any over the counter/automotive seals that would work, I fear that the OEM parts are going to cost a small fortune here. Thanks.

Depending on use and mileage and assuming we're talking about your 95 VFR, I'd just over haul the entire clutch hydrolics. I've used K&L after market parts/rebuild kits for the master cylinder and clutch slave with no problems and good results over the years. I'd add in a steel braided line for good measure. That will give you many more years of trouble free use. Check Ebay for some rebuild kits.

As for pit falls, no major ones. Clutch slave is held on by 2 bolts (I think it was two) and will slide out with some encouragement. Make sure you don't pull the rod that it actuates out as you don't need to. If you squeeze the lever the clutch slave piston will fall out, remember the order and direction of each rubber piece. Once apart, and the hose connecting to the clutch master is disconnected, clean it thoroughly. I use a bunch of spray brake parts cleaner. Wipe dry and reassemble. Soak the rubber pieces that will be on the "inside" in brake fluid. And the outer rubber piece that the actuating rod sits in, grease. I use a very thick brake caliper grease that doesn't run or get too messy and it works great. I put on a speed bleeder nipple as well just to make life easier. Now, reassemble carefully as the piston will push back out slowly from the spring pressure, then you start over if you drop the piston. If you get the slave back in place, the actuating rod will hold the piston in.

As for the master cylinder, you'll need a circlip pliers but after you get the circlip out, remove everyting, clean and rebuild with the rebuild kit (soak everything in brake fluid). Very straight forward as long as there's no need for honing the cylinder.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks a million. Funny thing is, I went to the local stealership earlier today and they couldn't even find the slave cylinder on the parts fiche!

That's one of the reasons I stopped using dealers a long time ago. If you plan on riding for a while, start gradually investion in some tools to work on the bike. Usually basic hand tools (which you probably already have) and a set of quality stands are a good start.

Try these rebuild parts. The seller has a web sight with lots of VFR parts. Siriusconinc.com I believe and they have all of the parts they list on ebay and more. I've used their stuff on many of my restores and so far so good. Ordering from their website seems just a bit cheaper on the shipping. They even have carb rebuild kit that seems OK and I just put it in my 93, although the jets are not genuine parts but copies.

for some reason the master cylinder link is coming up as the Sabre but their web site has the correct one.

Just notice you're in South Africa. Not sure if they ship there. Anyway, good luck with the rebuild!

I was able to get both the Clutch Slave and the Master Cylinder rebuild kit from my dealership.

The slave is located on a fiche that is very unrelated. I think with the Gear shifter and/or waterpump.
