I'd like to lower my pegs, but retain the OE peg itself. What are my options?

I just found the Knight Designs pegs. It sure isn't cheap, but may be what I'm looking for (they offer a rubberized version).

    Has anyone tried them?

    Any other options?

Did you ever get them? How did they work?

Yes, I did shortly after I asked about it. About 2 yrs now, so I'm used to them. They work fine. I think my foot slipped off the peg a time or two in the first week, because your foot can't get quite as close to the side of the bike, but that's unavoidable. I wish I could get a tad more legroom for knee comfort, but there's only so much adjustability on this bike. Adjusting the rear brake during install was a PITA, but not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. I'm still glad I got them.

Exactly what I have experienced. Only problem is the occasional toe dragging when I get a little frisky.
