my 86 700f2 ran great for the first month or so after i got it and then all of a sudden after a great day of riding the bike wouldnt turn over 7000 rpms. if you pull the clutch in or have it in neutral it will rev almost all the way to redline. If it is in gear and moving though it runs hard all the way to 7k to 7.5k and wont push any harder. im an automotive technician, and if it was a car i would suspect coils/wires because of the problem only when the motor has a load on it. but i have changed the plugs and i had a spare set of coils/wires that i tried on it with no change. my question is, Have anyone else here had that problem with theirs and what they did to better it. or could anyone give me a hint as to how to load the motor without moving so that i can test for would could be wrong. Any help would be greatly apreacated.

The only time I had an issue like that was when the PO had drilled out the main jets - and when I didn't tighten the float needle seat tight enough and it came loose. If you've eliminated electrical, I would check fuel.

    1. Fuel pump flow test (maybe it can't flow fuel as needed at high rpms)
    2. Check carb jets and float needles (maybe a float seat is loose or a jet came loose)
    3. Verify fuel tank vent is clean

One last thought on electrical: not sure on the '86, but if you have two sparkboxes (not coils), swap the sparkboxes and look at the tach. The tach is driven from one the coils and one sparkbox controls each coil. If the sparkbox/coil is bad, it should show on the tach.

Although, if a sparkbox is bad, I would think it would be bad throughout the RPM range, not just above 7K.
