Hi! I am the only broad in my bike club and the only one on a sport bike. I love to ride and I need some help. Second gear doesn't engage and I have found out that motor/tranny is all one piece. Is there a simple fix or a reason why only one gear would go out? Thanks guys.
PS. 1984 VF750F - all original except tail lights, grips, mirrors, and pony bags. Yes, I put bags on a sport bike - I am a broad after all.

    Stephanie

Have no fear Stephanie, someone will come along who knows exactly what your bikes issue is. In the mean time lets see her... or him.

    Welcome by the way.

    Ugh! No easy fix that I know of. It is either the shifting fork, gear "dogs", the shifting drum, or the shift fork guide pin (the last two are not very likely). The following link kind of shows what goes on from a top view;

    http://www.timberwoof.com/motorcycle/hondaCB1/transmission.html

Or, go to google and search on "motorcycle transmission". Lotsa stuff comes up. Could be that a longtime VFR person knows of something that is a particular issue with early models, but I suspect that the motor/tranny will need to come apart. Sorry!

PS I use Cortech soft saddlebags on mine...

Welcome biker girl. Glad to have a lady join the club.

It sounds like you might have a bent shift fork, scored/damaged shift drum or dog. There is a lot of stress on the shift fork, drum and dog from first to second. Could be normal wear and tear, or a factor from abusive (read: hard shifting) shifting from first to second, or there all around.

On a side note (doesn't seem like your second gear is out, however): Second gear is the most abused gear, and the most common gear to go out because of the missed shifts/false neutrals, and engagement across neutral from first. I had my second gear replaced on my FZR600 because some of the teeth got sheared off. They normally always will have to replace the gear next to it. Like first and second, third and fouth, if I remember correctly.

On a lighter note, if this is non-gear cog related, you should not have to split the tranny to get at the shifter drum and fork. Then again, that is on a '98, not an '84.

ONE option is to swap out your motor for a replacement unit from a salvage yard. Shipping can be as low as around $150.

Might not get your second gear engaged , but there are lots of bike-mad bachelors here, so maybe you?

Riding that sportbike is a is a BIG turn-on!
How wide are your chicken strips??

Hi. Stephanie. See you are popular already.

Sorry about my english. it is not one of my strongest bits.

I own one of those oldys my self and got into this same problem, and unfortunently it means complet taredown and rebuild of your gearbox and engine. The worst part is that it kosts alot of money, easily more than a buying another and maybe better bike, and the parts can be hard to find for old bike like yours.

    Hope it goes well.

I had a '84 Magna (similar engine) which had the same problem. Sounds like you have a bent shifting fork. This is sometimes caused by "speed shifting" (not using the clutch and kinda chunking it into gear).
The bad news==It requires an engine tear down to repair it.
The good news=It won't cause any more damage by riding it this way, as long as you don't mind not having 2nd gear.
I sold the Magna to my neighbor who has ridden it for over 10 years by just skipping 2nd gear. He said once he got used to it, he never really missed it.
    Good luck and welcome.

Squirrelman may faint from what I'm about to say

He's right, p/u a used salvage motor sounds like your best bet "if" you can't charm someone to do the work for you if you supply the parts needed.

But I had the same problem with a 82 sabre, 84 Magna, 84 intercepter, & a v-65 magna so it seams to be a problem in general with the early V-4's.
luckily for me it happened while under warrenty on the 3 V-45/750's but the V65 magna was a used bike & a thrasher( even took it in the dirt @ ASCOT flat track  , damn I really aged myself now), so I did what the one guy's neighbor did & just skipped 2nd with a double click to 3rd.

There is a simple way to see if it's only the shifting fork by shifting into 2nd but not releasing pressure & holding the shifter up.
If it moves in 2nd then it's the shifting fork (I know this sounds cave manish, but it works) & cheaper to fix, but if it doesn't it most likely is 2 or more things wrong & it's $$$$ time.

Good luck & hope it is a minor problem

    p.s. welcome to the site:biggrin:
wish it was in better circumstances for you :frown:
