Well, rather then taking my whole bike to a bodyshop, I am taking the parts to a local guy who does good work ( I have seen 3 of his previous jobs, and I was impressed ). He is a body guy, who also owns a 5th gen and is willing to do the job for about half the price of the shop rate quoted by my insurance as a side job. He is also a regular customer of my store, not some stranger I found on craigslist.
Taking the plastics off a third gen isnt extremly challanging, but it was time consuming as it was my first time and I had no idea how to go about it. Followed my clymer manual to the letter and it was extremly accurate. I had no idea I would have to remove both side uppers as well as windsheild and headlight.

I just put new front and left side plastic on on my rashed up 2000. I feel soooooooo much better, and so will you. FYI, check to make sure the bars and forks are straight in the triple clamps BEFORE you find yourself crabbing down the road, like I did.

    Atta boy Neck!

As long as you've got the fairings off take the opportunity to do any necessary maintenance work on your bike. Changing oil & filter, checking coolant level, tightening all coolant hose clamps, cleaning all the sand, little pebbles, and dead bugs that invariably end up in the vee between the cylinders, clean and gap spark plugs, wash the engine, check mounting bolt torques, etc.

Now is the time to really familiarize yourself with your bike's components and their locations for future reference.

We'll make a real "meck-a-nick" out of you yet Neck.

    Rollin to the rescue!

Rollin_Again is giving me the broken fairing I needed. By giving I mean selling for dirt cheap.
It is going to save me about 100$ off the repair.Realistically. A new one lists at around 400$ and that would be in some fantasy world where you could still find one. Not too mention I wont have a crapload of fiberglass showing underneath if I rebilt the one that I broke.
I put an extra ten buckeroos on there for you Rollin. hope you didnt attach it to the shipping cost. that was a poor boys way of showing thanks. 10$ aint much, but it was what I got, and I wanted you to have a beer on me if ya drink.
woohoo. thank god for the members on this board.
    thanks rollin.

Ok guys, so here is the new skinny on my bike.
    Rollin_Again = friend.
I received the lower fairing, and it is FLAWLESS.
I paid him through paypal, but since I havent used paypal in about 2 years, I didn't realize that I had my old address on my account. :loco: After tracking it and figuring that out, I had them hold it for me at fedex so I could go and get it on my day off. The office is 45 minutes away. doh!
After finally getting the box and opening it and seeing this new fairing for my motorbike... I have no words to describe it really. The missing peice to my baby....I must say I was like a little kid on christmas. Or maybe like finding the Holy Grail.

    THANK YOU Rollin_Again.

I took it to the bodyshop and the guy working on my bike had is arm in a sling. And his bike wasn't there. That is the suck. I wont devulge any of his personal details, not my place. However, his VFR will probably need some work now too :(

Anyways, I am a few days away from getting Mellisa back together ( yes I name inanimate objects ) and there will be photos. I might even break out the digital camera rather then my normal cellphone shortcut.

    Once again thanks Rollin!

Thanks for making me look like a saint but the lower fairings do not cost $400. The last time I checked was last summer after my first 3rd Gen was wrecked by my brother-in-law and they were running about $200. The only problem with buying them new is that they can be difficult to find in stock and in most cases it will still either have to be repainted to match the faded color of the rest of the bike or you would have to paint the entire bike to match the new fairing. Since your bodywork guy is already going to be painting your mid fairing it shouldn't cost much more to have him do the lower too. The picture below showing two of my favorite brand names in the world should answer the question you had about me.

    Regards,
    Saint Rollin

Ok. Me and Bweiss just finished putting her back together, I am VERY happy with the color match job that my body guy did.
Its 10:45 pm so its a little dark to take any decent pics. B took one of me on her maiden(ish) voyage to snag the win in the photo contest

---> http://vfrworld.com/forums/anything-goes/27773-photo-contest-23.html#post254086 ( shameless plug to my photo contest thread... watch out tiger tiger )

    Will post detailed pics soon.

    Time to order my decal.

 im sure you all know how happy I am right about now.

Ok so the body work is all done. ( again, fellers techie as I am, I don't own a digital camera, so in the overcast lighting, the pciture looks more orange then my hellfire red paintjob. I guess just compare the newly painted orange to the rest of the bike that also looks orange and you can tell it is a 100% color match ).
