Most likely it goes behind the RR to act as a heat sink, it most likely is made of aluminum, use some thermal silicon past between the RR and the plate and also between the plate and the frame rail where it mounts as that will also allow better heat transfer, the past can be purchased from Radio shack or about any electronics store.

    Best regards, Kent

I think all brands of OEM replacements are very well constructed these days. I initially applied some arctic goo on mine (Ricks Motorsports Electrics), however removed it all after Ricks told me not to use it, as the OEM replacements of todays age are up to the task on their own. I have hand tested the heat on mine after rides, and its not burning hot, like the original OEM piece of crap. Its considerably cooler, and not too hot to touch, so I am thinking i am going to be ok. About 8000 miles in now, without any issues. You watch...now that I say that I will strand myself tomorrow out in the middle of BFE.
