It appears i have a small oil leak it seems to be coming from the back cyclinders. I think that it is coming from the top gasket. Should i have some thing to worry about or does this mean that i simple have to order anougther gasket and replace the old one or can it simple be tightened down. The bike is an 85 vf1000r with about 35,000 miles on it. It seems to still be running strong but i not the best on to make that call since i had the bike for only about 4 weeks and never rode one like it before to compare it to.

    Valve cover gasket ??

TRY cleaning the gasket area and using some silicone sealing material, but resist any attempt to over-tightening the hold down bolts.....

If gasket has hardened and no longer resiliant consider replacing it.......IF you can get the part.

What happens is the rubber grommets around the hold down bolts shrink. This takes pressure off the valve cover gasket. Get some very thin washers. like .010-.020 thickness and put them under the caps of the bolts. This will apply the pressure needed to seal the gaskets. I just reread that you have a "R" motor. I know this works on all "F" motors. I'm assuming they both hold the valve cover on the same way. Had to do this to my 83 750. Works like a charm.

Thanks for the info guys, like everybody moneys tight so I'll try the washer trick first it only seems to be the back cover front is still good. This is my first crocth rocket style bike and i love it. Not to take away from my 82 900 super sport but this thing handles and rides so nice for a old heavy bike. I think I'll have this bike for a long time. May have to make some of the mods to keep up with the times a little but honda really out did them selves back in 85 with this bike.
