    Dear Riders,
I am new to the VF as I just bought a 86 vf500 only a week ago. Its my first bike and so far I am hooked. Up until now the bike was almost flawless and ran like a champ. Today however, we went on a long ride, my first long ride anyway, and about a half hour into it i noticed a great deal of oil all over my engine and leg. It really wasn't too much oil as the oil level didnt drop really but more so it was just blown all over the bike from the wind. When I was looking for the leak, I checked the oil level to see how much I had left and realized it was pretty far over the full line. The guy I bought it from said he just filled up the bike with new oil, but by the time I drained it down to its full level, I must have emptied a cup and a half of extra oil. I got the level close to the full line, but its still just slightly over right now on the dip stick. The bike still is leaking oil when it runs, and it seems to be comming from a small metal oil feeder line between the cylindar heads. Does anyone know what might have happened. Is the oil still spilling out from some over flow point because its still slightly over full, or did some seal get broken because of it being over filled? If anyone knows anything about my problem or how to help me let me know.
    Thanks

    Oil Leak

When the engine gets overfilled, oil can go up to the air box via crankcase breather tube. Check your air box, and filter. Obtain correct oil level, make sure you are doing right with the dipstick. Do you screw the dipstick in or do you just set the threads on top? Sounds like Crankcase breather hose to me. Your not going to hurt anything by playing with it. Clean with contact cleaner, or get a new one. Shouln't be too bad.

First, never trust what anyone else says about your oil or for anything in that matter.

If I hand my best friend an unloaded gun and I say its unloaded I hope he checks it for his damn self and doesnt assume that its empty.

When I got my newest bike from a dear freind, he assured me that all fluid levels, tire pressure etc etc, was fine. I double checked and he was right, but he was not offended that I checked anyways. Always check for yourself, we take our lives in our hands riding these beautiful but dangerous machines.

Secondly, I know the tube you are talking about but do not know the answer. I do know that by me replying to your post it puts your post back to the top of the list, so hopefully any of our resident guru's might notice your post and hopefully give some help?

Good luck and welcome to VFRworld.

If I see that you havent gotten a good answer by sunday I will ask my mechanic for you he knows these engines well.

You sure it's not fork oil blowing back at you? When mine leaked I didn't notice it on the short rides but on the the long rides it really accumulated.
