I got a K&N from amazon for ~$10, figured the socket on the end would ease install, but haven't installed yet.

OEM or K&N for my 5th Gen. $12-$13 for each. There's a bazillion options out there, and probably a lot cheaper. But its my money, and I can spend it how I want. So there.

Purolator filters is what I use most of the time. I will never use K&N filters due to the horror stories I have heard about them. I know at least 3 people who all experienced similar failures on the spot welds around the nut that led to significant oil leaking while riding which could have been catastrophic.

Although this question is not about oil filters, it is related, what filter wrench do most of you use for removing/installing? I realized that this was one of my tools that went MIA when my tool box was left at my sisters (BKA my old house). I have a "universal" strap wrench and would imagine that might be OK for removal but I would have no way to installing without guessing the torque I would be applying. Then again, looking at the location of the filter in relation to the headers, the strap wrench I have may not be easy to use regardless of removing/installing.

Right now I have the stock filter and replacing with a stock filter. That may change later but that's what I'll be dealing with this first oil change. (My first DIY, not the bikes)

    Cheers

edit: Sorry Sin, I wasn't trying to hijack your thread. It seemed like a good question to ask relative to the topic.

Ok, this is just an edited re-post of what I said in another thread.

    Take a look at this.

PureONE Flow vs. PSID Data from Purolator - Bob Is The Oil Guy

It is very cool that Purlator KNOWS how their filters flow and are happy to share the data. Everything I keep finding says that for the money, the Purolators are GREAT!

    I also found this.

    SAE Oil Filter Test

Another good thread that relays info. about absolute filtration abilities of P1's.

Oil filter micron rating - Bob Is The Oil Guy

Now here is text I found that I consider worth not linking, but actually printing in full for everyone to read.

It looks like the P1 (and other high quality filters with similar qualities) will do the best job of filtering particles in a critical size range (10 - 20 microns) as the oil continues to cycle in your engine. The Purolator can be had off Amazon for about $7 delivered. I am quite convinced that the Purolator P1 is a superior very affordable choice.

I use my hand. Keep it hand tight, never have any leaks and it only takes a lil muscle to get it off.

I was able to loosen my last one by hand. The P1 has a really grippy, textured rubber coating. Helps a bunch when loosening. My favorite type of wrench is the cup style that fits over the end of the filter.
