Another VF bites the dust!! Sorry!

    How many miles??

Check under the radiator cap, and if you're low on coolant and the smoke was whiteish......

you've blown a head gasket which, for that bike, is as rare as honest politicians, so sell the tank, the wheels, whatever else looks good and buy the clean, white '87 VFR 700 from Tulsa just listed here. You'll be glad you did!

If you see a puddle of oil and your boots are wet look for a hole in the crankcase.

Rebuilding what you have will not, sadly, be cost-effective compared with finding another bike.

    sorry!

    *nod nod*

Name her, and take a picture before you start selling parts.

Of course you now have an golden opportunity to get the motor out and apart to do an educational excerise and assesment of exactly what broke and what might still be good and just how you MIGHT rebuild it if the parts were available and you had the time, tools and inclination to do so..........

wait before you tare it down!!!!!!!. add a bottle of restore ride it for 50 miles then a bottle of slick50 it will help restore the compression after 100 miles ad a bottle zmax it will clean out all the carbon while you do this run a full can of b-12 in your tank with fresh gas.. what do you have to loose??? but these products work so i would try them before writing off your engine.. don't listen to those that don't know anything..:crazy:good luck give a report i bet you those additives help out..

YOU need to find out WHY the gasket blew and correct that problem or a new gasket will blow again.

they don't just wear out but fail for a reason.

got a torque wrench and quality tools??

I am always surprised and pleased to see someone preservere to prove me wrong. I encourage evan.

But, again, I agree with Squirrel, and must support him further. These Engines dont blow for no reason. Let me offer some brainstorming as to why I wrote this engine off...
Engines blow due to very poor maintenance, or excessive use into high rpms, impropper combustion mixture, metal fatigue due to either original manufacturer or improper modification and or (again), improper maintenance.

I also concur, blowing a head gasket is... what did he say
So I surmise, There is more to this simple head-gasket dilemma. For the time and effort spent into a full tear down, diagnosis, repair, and rebuid... OF A PREVIOUSLY BLOWN ENGINE, I stand behind the statement,... better off parting the bike, or replaceing the engine.

Again, I encourage defeating my thought process.

    Good luck!

    horse and cart

Lets not get the cart in front of the horse....just get it apart and find the cause of failure. He will have plenty of time to check deck , head , head bolts and other related parts before assembly.Never know could just be a corrosion issue with head gasket at its age.My hopes are high for easy fix.

ditto. Take the motor apart and see what the problem is. Then go from there.
