So I finally got around to hooking my GPS up to the bike and checking it out...

How is it my odometer is dead on with the GPS, but at 60mps (bike) shows 55 on the GPS and at 100mph(bike) shows 91 on the GPS.

I took the bike to 100 dead on on the bike then checked my 'top speed' on the gps after I got home....

Sounds like Honda intentionally made the speedo read 10% higher to make squids like me think I'm goin faster than I really am. This is actually the main reason I DON'T want a speedohealer, I'm fine with thinking I'm haulin a little more ass than I really am.

If you're at all concerned about it you can purchase a speedohealer. They also come in handy should you decide to gear your ride. I never did woory too much about the speedo being off, it's the odometer that's bothersome.

Yeah, the odometer is dead on with the gps.... miles and tenths of miles tick withing fractions of a second between the bike and GPS.

I was only concerned about the speedometer being off because I'm battling a bad gas mileage problem I realize that if the odometer is ok then it shouldn't be an issue and now knowing that being off is the 'norm' i'm not too concerned about it.

That's strange. This is the second time I've heard about this happening in recent weeks, where the speedo is off and the odometer isn't. My understanding is that the two are directly related to one another. Which is to say that the odometer takes its measurments from the speedo. I think that it was Cyborg who was having the same issue. You may want to get with him to find out if he was able to resolve the issue.

What type of MPG issues are you having? Any mods? It looks like you may have a 2 Bros. slip-on or maybe some other brand. If so it may, depending on what else you've done, be the cause.

When I got the bike I was getting about 23 to 25mpg, but the bike runs great, not hesitiations or sluggishness... IT does everything I could ask. After reading the forums and testing the radiator heat at about 150 I found that both radiators were getting warm before the thermostat was supposed to be open. The right one should heat up, but the left should remain cold until the thermostat lets the coolant flow. Anyway, I changed the thermostat and I gained about 6mpg, currently getting 29/30mpg or so. In reading the mpg threads it seems I should be getting upwards of 40....

Anyway, back to the bike. The only mods done to it are the flapper mod, snorkel removal and a K&N air filter. Stock exaust, no Power commander or anythng like that.

I'm going to make an consious effort to run as high gear as possible on this tank of gas to see waht happens. Readig that some of these guys on here get over 30mpg when riding hard has me baffled as to what my issue is.

Could the O2 sensor/resistor mod be worth trying? Cheap and easy and couldn't hurt I suppose.

The sprockets are stock sizes as well.

Anything else to look for for crappy mpg?

Also, on VFRD I got a couple of replies that their VFR's were good on the odometer but off on speed by 7 to 10 % on two different bikes, mine is in that range.

I run the o2 elims in conjunction with a dynoed PCIII and get between 33-36 MPG under aggressive riding. I don't know if just the o2 elims will do anything for mileage but my understanding is that they will do a great job of eliminating the off idle jumpiness you're probably experiencing at parking lot speeds. If your cans may need to be re-packed, not sure how many miles you have, but that can cause the ECU to run the bike a little rich. Although if that's the case, and that's iffy, I would just find a good aftermarket slip-on. Just a side note, if you where to get a slip-on, especially a used one, a PCIII with a dyno tune, you should get your MPG where it needs to be and the money you save on gas should easily cover the expense, over time. Plus your bike will run in ways that you never thought it could. No more HP and torque drops at mid-tach, etc etc.

The bike has about 22k on it now. I'll try the o2 elim since it's next to free jsut to see what happens. I just got the bike before this riding season so to keep the wife happy I'm not lookign to do to many expensive things to it quite yet. For now I'm just happy I have the bike, and over the winter I'll look more at PCIII/exaust type stuff.

    Thanks for the info!
