o7 vfr 3rd gear issue

    when i am shifting threw the gears and hit third it will cut in and out with the power at 3k rpms i was thinking that maybe the engine is lugging but at 3k that would not be it right? does any one else notice this. it only has 2k miles and it had its first services done.

    I've noticed on mine if I shift at low RPM and am not very careful with throttle demands, it's really easy to lug the engine. I wouldn't describe it as cutting out, but more as 'jerky'. I've also noticed this is more pronounced when the bike isn't completely warmed up...not as noticable after I've been running awhile. 6 gens really don't like 'under 3K' very much.

    I would agree totaly. You should be shifting later than that. Not many sportbikes like that point in the tach. 6gens are notorious for it. If the bike feels like you're riding with the choke on, then low rpm and not so great stock mapping are more than likely what you're experiencing. I'm sure you've noticed how the VFR can surge at parking lot speeds. The stock mapping will cause the bike to behave similarly in any gear at low rpm. There are several remedies for this depending on what you want exactly. This site offers a lot of info on this problem. The PCIII solves the issue, and more. Gearing also helps, as does de-pairing. Do some research and you should find something that will fit your specific criteria and budget.

    A couple of things to remember; Shifting too early is much harder on a performance engine than taking it to redline is, and 2000 miles on a VFR is not even close to being broken in. You'll notice as the miles get higher and higher that certain things will just start to smooth themselves out. Unfortunately the low rpm lugging and surging thing isn't one of them.

    Mine has never given me issues in 3rd at 3000 RPM but then again I bought it at 15k RPM and it was already broken in and smoothed out. It doesn't pull hard from there either but it sure doesn't lug the engine. It is nice and smooth.

    What I did have problems with is that sometimes when shifting (any gear) it would die. This was due to the idle RPM being about 100RPM low. Make sure that your idle when warmed up is somewhere between 1300-1400 RPM and see if that doesn't help this out a little bit.

    Mine has done this also. Mainly when downshifting for a slow 90 degree city intersection when only 'warm' as opposed to 'heat soaked'. Again...also at low RPM and when I'm not particularily paying attention to what I'm doing 'throttlewise'. For me the fix is to keep the R's up just a little.

    If you wanna 'put' around on a 6 gen, it takes a bit more attention to the controls than most other bikes.
