Hey, I wondered if anyone could help me out as I have an issue with the exhaust system on my 2000 Fi-Y (I'm in the UK).

There is a box which sits between the downpipes and the end can and my understanding is that this would be called the collector box? The only way I can describe it is as the box that sits in between the centre stand and if you're looking from the side of the bike it's at the bottom in the centre between the end of the fairing and the start of the end can. Hope someone can work out what I'm talking about!

Anyway, some holes are appearing and it has started to leak exhaust smoke all over the place and makes a popping noise when I rev the bike up from standstill.

I guess my three questions are:

    1) What is the box actually called so that I can look to see how much a replacement is.
    2) How urgent is it that I do something about it? (I use the bike as a daily commuter so rack up the miles pretty quick).
    3) Will it be easy to replace it myself or is it best left to a mechanic? (I have diy mechanical experience through bike ownership and I also own a '73 VW Camper so spend plenty of time tinkering with that - I do know my limits though!)

Any helpful replies gratefully received as I'm stuck not knowing what to do and don't want to get fleeced for cash at the garage if I can sort it out myself.

    Cheers, Martin.

The box that you are speaking of should be the catalytic converter. I don't really think you can replace it seperate of the entire header assembly but I could be wrong.

Since it is a daily driver, you will probably want to get it fixed relatively quick. It is no different than your car with an exhaust leak. It might cause your check engine light to come on, a little loss of power, and you'll get less MPG.

Yes, its easy to fix. You'll need a new set of headers, new gaskets everywhere along the path, a six pack of beer, and a few hours to a whol afternoon depending on how comfortable you are with doing it. There's nothing two it, you just need patience and time.

I don't know if the bike calls for it or not, but some use locktite on some of the bolts so they dont come off.

Time to keep your eye out for a used set of headers... it will probably be a $600 part from the dealer. Aftermarket ones are the way to go, but then you also have to eliminate the O2 sensors, get a power commander, and a good map for your bike.
