After my first ride Thursday evening on my street '86 VFR750F that I bought over the winter, I started hearing a ticking noise that got louder once warmed up. I checked valve clearances since I had no idea when it had been done, as it has 88,xxx kms on it. All were right on the money. Upon closer inspection, turning the engine over slowly, I found this:

Is this a common problem on these? I've heard they can be removed completely, although a little noisy afterwards. Experiences? I'm thinking for the race bike, it may be a good idea...I'd rather not have little parts flying apart at max revs.

I removed the same cam from my race bike engine and installed it. Purrs like a kitten again!

Those bikes won't run right at 40F below, Gordy, and you've depressed me even more by causing worry and discomfort, thinking Honda might build anything that breaks on a "bulletproof" engine. If not Honda's fault, must be "owner abuse," eh ?

So no one here has had this happen, ever? I can't be the only one?

You might want to search the other VF/VFR forums. I am sure I saw a thread about this somewhere.

Hmm, I occasionally get a ticking from mine. But 6000 miles later and no problems whatsoever I'm inclined to leave it alone. What's the general consensus on that drilling mod? Is it mainly to remove the noise, or is there a significant mechanical benefit that will prolong the life of the engine?

Thanks for the help & links. I've done that mod to my '95 when I had it years ago. I don't think it applies to the earlier version though, only the '95-96 VFRs.
