Hi, I went to start my 1998 VFR800 and it seemed a bit reluctant to start, but was turning over fine. It did eventually start but weirdly the starter motor carried on spinning. I immediately switched off and hit the kill switch but the starter still carried on, so I started to undo the battery connections. However, whilst doing that all power disappeared and the main display went completely blank. I checked all the fuses located between the battery and fuse box and all are ok. I tried jumping the battery which made no difference so I removed the battery and it seems almost dead; swapped it and no difference. If I try to charge the battery in situ it won't unless I disconnect one terminal. I am baffled so can anyone help please?

The starter spinning continually is probably due to the starter solenoid welding closed. Use a multimeter and check continuity through that with everything powered off; should be 0. There's also a main fuse as part of the solenoid body.

Thanks, first I need to get power back, so I assume it's the fuse you mention? Would you be able to point me to a diagram with this and the the starter motor location please?

I would add: there's not much point throwing a new main fuse into place if the solenoid is borked. Test that first, just put the meter across the two major wire terminals; if there is continuity you need a new starter relay.
