Hello fellows, Tonight I started my 1999 VFR800 and realized I had no headlights low or Hi beams. I checked all the fuses and they are all intact. Speedo lights and all other lights and apparently everything else is working. I find it strange both headlight bulbs would go out UNLESS I didn't notice one was out earlier. Any thoughts?
The exact same thing happened to me on Sunday. I believe the hi-lo switch is going bad since I got the headlights back after messing with it for a minute or two. KC-10 FE out... lane: :usa2:
Did that happen to either of yo while you were riding? Cause that would really suck if it happened to me. I go to work at 02:30 and the freeways here are not lit.
Yep, happened to me out on the road. Didn't you read the last thing I posted in the Po Po thread? KC-10 FE out... lane: :usa2:
ONCE again: the headlight circuit is powered through switch contacts inside the "starter" push button, so if that button is sticky or does not return fully to the OUT position, contact will be interuped and no power will flow to left ( hi-low) switches.......
After reading the posts I did go back and turn the key and the lights did not come on HOWEVER after toggling the start button I was able to get the headlights to come on. Apparently something is up with the connection in the start button. Thanks for the helpful input.
I spoke with my favorite Honda tech and he said it wasn't too uncommon for the connector in the start switch to have issues with dirt, etc. He rec: I go to Radio Shack and get some "tuner cleaner" (does not damage plastic) and using compressed air and tuner cleaner to clean the connection that turns off the headlights during starting. Supposedly two philips head screws are holding the plastic together to get to the connection at the starter button. I don't have my bike here at the office to look for myself. Again thanks.
the solder connections between the wires and the switch contacts ("start" pushbutton) can sometimes break, in which case contact cleaner won't help.
This is all good stuff everyone. Seems there could be a number of easy quick fixes most of us can accomplish ourselves without major involvement. Trial and error may be part of it but if you save a few bucks and don't do any further harm to your steed, then WTF eh! Doh.... my accent just came out. And I was being sooo good.
Found this thread with Search. I'm having the same problem. Was out on a ride, and noticed my headlights were flickering. Checked for loose connections, everything checks out OK. I left work this morning before sunrise and had no headlights. This afternoon, same thing. After reading in this thread about the starter switch, I walked out to the parking lot, turned the ignition on, no headlights, jiggled the starter switch... headlights! I guess I'll be taking apart the switch to clean dirty contacts. Thanks for the info!!!
