They are not to protect the plastic, they are for protecting the frame. That mounting location isn't going to do much for the plastic if you drop it, once the footpeg folds up the fairing and side cover are toast. It might help the rad from getting smashed if you lowside though.

Those actually are fairing protectors. The fairing will probably crack at the mount, but it will be saved some road rash and will be repairable. If you drop it in the driveway, it should prevent a good amount of paint damage. Someone posted in a thread that they saw a VFR with this kind of slider go down and it was saved a lot of damage. My 2000 came with a set on it, but I am thinking of a way to make the bracket stronger. I think if you drop the bike at speed, the sliding could bend up the bracket and damage your radiator. I would like it if I could trust them to help save my radiator. I think I can reinforce/support the bracket so it doesn't just bend/collapse if the bike takes a highside roll over.

Judging from my numerous stopped or near stopped drops, I'd say they'd help. I need a set STAT. As far as if you lay it down moving, well then they prob won't help a ton...maybe better than without, though.

No they actually aren't. I dare you test them, even sitting still and just letting it drop. It will hit the case and the lower fairing before it even comes close to that piece of plastic. Not to mention that it is probably the worst mounting location and method for such a thing. You would be better off with rigid footpegs.

Edit: "Someone posted in a thread that they saw a VFR with this kind of slider go down and it was saved a lot of damage" Well then, if someone "saw" a thread about it, it must be fact. I stand corrected.
