With a new season about to start I have a question for everybody! Has anyone used or is thinking of using NITROGEN instead of everyday air in their tires? If you have what are your thoughts? Also are there any concerns about using it in motorcycle tires, if so what are they!? I was thinking about it today and thought I would put it out there! I mean it would save rubber in the long run wouldn't it? Also not having to constantly check air pressure every 2 to 3 days to once a week it would be a nice change, at least that's my thinking anyway!

Let me know what you guys and girls think!

    Much appreciated, Cdnvffer.

    Cheers

OK, so I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree, but I've never heard of this. I'm not knocking it, but just curious on why nitrogen?

What do you do when/if you get a flat?
How would go about normal maintenance?
    How would it save rubber?

    Nitrogen

    Hi Folks,
It is my understanding that, unless you are racing, there is little to no benefit to using nitrogen. It's supposed to run cooler and not escape as quickly as plain old air, but the changes would be difficult or impossible to notice on the street.
    Cheers!

I believe this was already beaten to death in a couple of other threads, and the concensus was that Slick 50 works better than Nitrogen.

The justification for nitrogen is based on physics, specifically the gas laws. They are: General Gas, Boyle's & Charles. In order to prevent a 1000 word essay on the particulars, I will simply break it down into layman's terms.

    1) Air (meaning the stuff from your bike pump/air compressor) is compossed of many gases & moisture.

    2) That moisture (humidity) will affect the pressure a gas will have at a given temperature.

So, to keep this as simple as I possibly can, the more moisture in your tires, the more the PSI can vary. On the flip side of that, the less moisture in the tire, the less the pressure will vary. Nitrogen will not hold moisture & since it is a single gas instead of a mix, will be completely stable. Nitrogen is used in aircraft tires. That is to prevent any moisture that would be present in normal air from freezing at altitude.

Since I've most likely bored you to tears at this point, I'll wrap this up. For anything other than world champion level racing, there is not a single reason to use nitrogen in a street going motorcycle. I simply will not pay $5-$10 just to fill up my tires. Is it better? Yes, absolutely. Is it worth the headache? Not at all. Buy a bicycle pump or a quality air compressor & worry about something else. Like how much of a nightmare it is to change the brake fluid in the LBS VFR's use.

    KC-10 FE out...

KC gave the best answer, moisture being the reason it is better. Probably never notice, but if you look at some car/truck tires sometimes they have a green valve stem cap. Thats the universal sign that they were filled with nitrogen not air originally.

Don't forget checking your pressures regularly also lets you inspect tires at the same time.

Of course Nitrogen means you'll have to rotate the air in your tires more often.

Isn't the air we breathe, and fill our tires with for FREE, 78% nitrogen? I have a buddy who was running nitrogen in his tires for a while. Typical new rider doing what he reads in the squid magazines. We're at VIR watching some amateur/club racers and walking through the pits. I tell him go check out old boy over there and see what he's running in his tires. So my boys goes and comes back looking dejected. He's crushed to find out that the privateer racer guy is running 78% nitrogen just like me for FREE. The moisture argument has some validity, but all of the folks that I know that run nitrogen don't race and will never see the benefit. Plus, they don't check their tire pressures often enough. Street riders will not gain enough value from the nitrogen and thus just spent enough for what I got for FREE. They could have payed for a good day ride worth of gas with the scratch spent on nitrogen.

Can't you use the nitrogen in the tire to make a DIY NOS kit? With out a bottle, no one will suspect it.

I just havent worked out the spinning valve stem yet, but I'm working on it.

I work in the cryogenics business and I air my tires with nitrogen all the time.
It's free for me and I keep a cylinder of it in my garage and use it for all of my tires including cars and service truck. It's mainley for the convenience. Nitrogen is drier than your normal compressed air and it is the moisture in air that causes your tire pressure to rise higher than it would with nitrogen.
If it wasn't free I wouldn't use it.

I use it in my car mainly because Costco threw it in for free when I got new tires. I don't see any benefit in using it in motorcycle tires, I'm not going out of my way to get it.

    Nitrousva,

You could try adding an extension from the existing stem to the exact center of the wheel :^) ...
