Hello everyone. I just joined the VFR family about 2 weeks ago. I picked up a very clean white 93 VFR. So far I am absolutely loving it, but there is one issue that is bothering me.

Right at 4500 rpm there is a rattle that sounds like it is coming from the front of the bike. It makes the noise regardless of speeding up or slowing down and it is consistently at 4500 rpm. I have heard exhaust rattles before and this doesn't sound like that.

Has anyone else had this happen or might know where the noise could be coming from?

    Thanks!

Welcome. The guys here get pretty turned on by white 93 VFR's so post up some pics asap. Re your noise, by speeding up or slowing down do you mean its rev related instead of speed related? ie, it does it regardless of what gear you are in.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try to get some pictures up soon! Its looking pretty good for being 21 years old.

The noise will occur regardless of gear or speed. Every time the rpms hit 4500.

So it's definitely something engine related. At what revs does it go away? I'm not to clued up with motors but I'm sure someone will be able to help ( one guess is out of synch carbs making it run a tad rough in that rev range) My bike has a definite "pulse" at around 4500rpm, wouldn't call it a rattle though.

That is a normal 'feature' of the 3rd gen. It seems to be a high frequency mechanical resonant vibration of the filler tube below the fuel cap that gets excited from 4500 to 5500 rpm. Honda added some weights behind the footpeg brackets (passenger or pilot?) to try to damp it out, but it is an elusive noise that has been around since the beginning and nobody has solved it, AFAIK. It is a nuisance in an otherwise perfect machine--it does no harm other than to annoy us...

Thanks for the responses! It definitely doesn't feel like an issue with the engine and performance is not affected. Maybe I will see if I can figure out a way to stop the noise. At 4500 it is right at cruising speed and gets annoying.

I'm glad its nothing to worry about though. It will last for about 200 rpm either side of 4500.

I know this sounds crazy, but try putting a hand on the gas cap when the noise occurs and see if it stops. My '86 does the same thing around 4300 rpm. When I took it for our first long distance journey together is when I first noticed it. It started this high pitched rattle and I noticed it correlated with that spot on the tach. I could've sworn it was coming from the top end, so I leaned up to rest my left arm across the tank in exasperation at the thought of being stranded so far from home and...... VOILA!!! the noise stopped. It was the gas cap the whole time.

Just a shot in the dark... Good luck!

If either of the 2 rubber tank "buffers" at sides have fallen off fuel tank and are m.i.a., tank is prone to noise and vibes. Often get misplaced during tank removal.

Yep! Cut a piece of rubber from an innertube when one went MIA, till a new one showed up..

What an innertube is can be found on Google or Wiki..;)

Thanks for all the advice! I am well aware of intertubes and what they are haha. I will see if the rubber is missing this evening.

This is a little off topic but has anyone done a clever clock install or something like that? That is the only thing other than a volt meter that I want to add to the information display.

I'm not sure how different the 93 is from my old 94, but on my 94, I had a bit of a buzzing noise that I would hear from time to time too. Mine ended up being the front section of the fuel tank where it slides into the frame. I ended up just wrapping some electrical tape around the two posts that slide in, and took care of my annoying rattle/buzz. Theres my 2 cents.

I was trying to find the pics of my voltmeter install, buts its a boat unit thats water proof, round, and looks just like a Honda gauge.

It fits perfectly in the round cut out in the left side fairings. Mine is wired to the relay that takes voltage directly from the battery during running.

Check out roadstercycle, they have an LED voltage monitor that is easy to install and very small. LED assembly comes right out of plastic mount so it can be install in a hole on the bike.
LED changes color based on voltage, I installed mine in my instrument bezel, as long as it is green, all is well.
