Newbie VFR 1200F owner question

Go easy on me!
I just took my 1st short ride on the 1200. I have to learn what noises it makes and what gear to be in .
I guess my question is I don't want to lugg it IE: being in too high of a gear so what sould I be shooting for in the gears? It's pretty quiet with the stock exhaust so I'm kinda relying on the tach.
I realize there are a million variables but just looking for a "general" lowest speed per gear.
Keep in mind I'm coming of a 93 VMax so there's a humongous difference between the 2!
I can tell ya 1 thing, it's fast! lol
