In the process of trading for a 1983 vf750f. this will be my first vf. I noticed some posts about cam tensioner noise. This bike has 22000 miles on it, and has a light engine noise, kinda faint actually. Are these engines normally noisy, or u think it's time for chain tensioners?

Oh boy. My best advice would be to spend a lot of time here searching: cams, cam wear, oil kits, etc.

...and welcome to the board. You have found the right place for info on your new bike, if you get it.

Exactly, rocker arm wear is the #1 cause of engine noise on those engines. The cam chain tensioners aren't the best either, but I would rule out the rockers first. Those are still Hondas and far better than any other similar bike from 1983. I hope you get it and enjoy it!

Tough to say without being there but all engines will make noise but when a tensioner goes AWOL you will know it. What kind of a deal are you getting on it, just ask to know if it is worthwhile trade.

Thinking of trading my 1982 suzuki gs750 bobber for it. I just don't want to go from a good reliable bike to a pos.

When you are at the bike, it is barely audible. If you do a video, the thing sounds like it's about to fly all to heck. I have a really nice bike that he wants. As the vf is in really good shape, I just can't afford a money pit.

Stick with the sure thing, a safe bet, one in the hand is better than two in the bush and so on. My two pennies of thought for what it's worth , good luck.

Think I'm gonna go ahead and get it, do a motor off, clean and put down some custom paint. Then do the tensioners and whatever else it needs this winter. Really sweet bike, always wanted on since they first came out. Already has f1r exhaust, plastic is in great shape, new rubber. White frame and wheels, with some blue plastic should sweet.

I have an '84 I bought a few years ago for "fun." While I have owned it, the fork seals have sprung leaks; the clutch pushrod seal has failed (oh, the manual tells you to pull the engine and split the case to replace it!); the head gasket blew; a cam chain tensioner failed; my fuel tank sprung leaks and had to be replaced; my shock failed (the pneumatic shock is a wonderous device!). But my valves, rockers and cam lobes are good!:gosteelers:

I intend to replace the fork seals and sell it while it's running. I will replace it with something more reliable - like a Ducati Monster 900!

Me too. Squirrelman is like that invisible little guy on your shoulder who says, "Stop! Think about it for a second! Do your research and truly, truly understand what you are getting yourself into here!"
