A while back I posted by Buell Xb12Ss for trade here, but I didn't have any luck. Someone finally bought it and I went looking at VFRs.

Last night I picked up a red 2003 non ABS with 11k miles for $3400. It has smoke high wind screen (Also original), and a Givi trunk. The owner was an oprah rich doctor who purchased it brand new in 04. It's flaw is that he tried to put it on the center stand and dropped it against his benz. Bent front brake lever and a scratched heat shield on the exhaust.

Pics will come in a bit.

So I just rode it home from the seller's house. Here are my initial impressions:

    1. Its quiet. Its so damn quiet.
    2. Great wind protection. Coming from a naked bike - this was welcomed
    3. Seems like I'm shifting a lot. Also the engine revs down quickly so when I upshift I have to pay a lot of attention to the RPMs for a smooth shift/avoid engine braking.
    4. Coming from a buell that only revved to 7k, it feels weird going fast on this and letting it stretch out so long.
    5. Shifting feels great coming from an ancient harley transmission. A lot more "click" and a lot less "clank"

    Questions:
    1. What is the easiest way to eliminate the ugly fender?
    2. Do you think the trunk assembly is sturdy enough to let my girlfriend lean against it?

I have never seen that key before. I bought my 06 brand new still in the crate and it did not come with that key or anything like it.

Be careful in eliminating the fender. I assume you mean the rear fender. If you ride at all in the rain, leave it alone. I cut mine off just above where the bottom of the license plate would be and now regret it cause I ride in rain. My back gets really muddy because of that. If you don';t ride in the rain, then it is not an issue. I cut mine with a dremel and used a hand file to clean up the cuts.

Searched my service manual, nothing. Nothing in the Owners Manual, probably for factory panniers?

Just at the Honda dealer, Parts guy (extensive history with VF) say not from bike, car maybe?

Yes, they are quiet. Look around for some aftermarket cans. Let her breathe!
Shifting a lot? Keep in mind these VFRs hate lower RPMs. Even tooling around town, I would suggest never running it below 3500rpm. I'm typically at 4500 to 5000.

Easiest way to eliminate fender? As Randy said - dremel. Or sawzall if a dremel is too whimpy for ya.

I know nothing about hard luggage - but that key isn't for the luggage? Is there an alarm somewhere on the bike that requires a key to disable it?

    Thank you for asking him!

So the dmv was disappointing today. They would not transfer the title because they said the mileage was written over. Basically the PO wrote so softly that I went back over it. Even though the mileage was on the title, Bill of sale, and the bike was in the parking lot, they wouldn't do it. I could either get the title to say "exemp" forever, or find the seller to have him fill out another form. I guess I'll do the latter, because if I ever decide to sell I assume the exempt mileage will be an issue.

Can you fill out the form yourself and just get him to sign. Maybe his wrists can't handle the pressure. JK of course. What a pain. We don't seem to have all the trouble you guys do down there with title and all that stuff. All motor vehicles licensed here have to be registered with DMV via vin so once it it registered, it is there until Team Belarus wins Olympic Gold in Ping Pong

My bike came without the fender. Found one for cheap and installed it.
Your girlfriend might prefer to lean against OEM trunk, but that one is just fine. Just double-check to make sure bolts are tight properly.

At the DMV it comes down to who you get. Miss a middle initial or shorten you name from Richard to rich and it's a problem for one or no big deal to another attendant.

Well I drove back to the seller's house to fill out the form and give him his generator key back. He asked me if I was enjoying the bike and I said yes, but noted that there was a significant scratch on the left fairing that he didn't disclose to me (I know this is my job to inspect it, but it was poor lighting and he was assuring me confidently that there was only the damage to the pipe). As I was gearing up to leave he ran out and handed me $300 and said he was sorry and he doesn't remember getting that scratch. So now I am only into this fancy beast for $3100.

I'd have turned it down. Just on the principle. The guy was being too nice. Wait- rich doc? Did you mention it only had a half tank of gas
