First off, Hi everyone, I am new to motorcycling and the VFR. I was hoping to hear some advice as to owning the VFR 800. I'm going to be picking up a 2006 VFR very soon. I'm a very anal person when it comes to maintenance and upkeep. Also I am one of those guys that cant keep something stock. I do plan to enjoy the VFR for awhile or atleast the first season stock. Then in Winter maybe fab up an exhaust.

My primary concerns are is there a good repair manual?

I read a couple of the common problems but cant really find anything that is a must fix except for maybe a manual cam chain tensioner. hopefully others can chime in on this?

Also I do want to get rid of the cats, not being from california. I'm sure this has been covered so ill start using the search function lol.

Is there common modifications ANY tips? this is my first motorcycle. but I have been around them for awhile and built 2 ground up before this. I finally found it time to get my own bike. And I hope the VFR doesn't disapoint!

    Welcome!

You can find the OEM shop manual on vfrdiscussion in the downloads section.

The weak point in the VFR is the electrical system, with problems with burned stators, burned electrical connectors, regulator/rectifier problems, etc. You might want to give your electrical system a once over, checking the charging voltage as well as applying Oxgard to connectors. You might want to get a VFRness, also. Thermostats tend to fail commonly. Bleeding the linked brakes takes a bit of extra work but is decently documented in the shop manual and online.

Hi and welcome to the MadHouse :welcome:

As you have not yet picked up the bike - it is worth stressing that folks on here won't believe it exists until you head over to the "introductions" sub forum and say Hi to the rest of the forum and post up at least one photo of your VFR.

You might also want to update your forum profile "My Profile" link at the very top of the page to include the specs of your VFR and a rough location city/state is fine. That way the information will appear automatically alongside your posts and if you need help with a problem - you may find someone nearby is willing to swing by and offer advice - especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge.:drink:

As for things to look out for, I suggest you browse through the 6th gen and other relevant sub-forum topics. That should give you plenty of ideas for modifications and the known problem areas. Whilst the charging system wiring on later (2006+) VFRs was beefed up, the stator and RR can and do fail - mine did! Sadly it is really a matter of when, not if, things will go wrong with the charging system.

    Take care
