Hey all, in the last couple weeks after buying my 05' i have done a bunch of work. Since i dont really know the last time anything was done I have changed the coolant, fresh Motul 5100 and filter, chutch fluid flush, wrastled on a new set of Michelin Pilot 2CT, and just general cleaning. Now i have a couple questions. While checking the air filter, I notice that the flapper valve, flap, and snorkel have all been removed. I've seen a few mention "block off plates" after the removal of the flapper parts, where is it that you block off? And what is the reason for doing this? (BTW I checked the vacuum line and it IS nicely plugged) Second is what is the reason for unplugging the pair valves? I think the white plug in the attached pic is for the pair valve, correct? The flapper valve opens a second inlet port to the airbox, triggered by the ECU at 5500rpm, and activated by vacuum line controlled by an electric solenoid. By default the flapper is open, and the vacuum is used to close it. So disabling the flapper actuating mechanism leaves it open. AFAIK, the flapper is there to help the bike pass noise regs, and opening it makes more intake noise but makes no more or less power. I disabled mine as I did not like the change in intake noise when it opened. Not sure why you'd pull the snorkel but presumably in the hope of increased airflow and more power. No idea whether this is worthwhile doing. The PAIR system is purely to reduce unburnt exhaust gases, and is designed to bleed fresh air from the airbox into the exhaust headers. The system adds a lot of rubber hoses to a machine that already has plenty, and removal makes maintenance a little easier. The block-off plates are rectangular metal approx 3 x 5cm, one screwed onto the top of each cam cover. The PAIR port on the airbox should also be capped, some use marbles jammed into the hose to do that.
