Hello all. I am considering buying this model from a friend. I have never seen one before. Are there any other commonly known issues besides the well known cam oiling problem? Just how rare is this bike? I can't find any production numbers on it. Also, this particular bike I am looking at has a full fairing painted to match the red, white, and blue theme as opposed to the bottom fairing I see on most Interceptors. Was this a factory option? Or aftermarket only. What would you tell me about parts availability/cost across the whole spectrum especially wear item parts?
I have been a fan of the inline 4 style of UJM ever since I taught myself how to ride on a Honda 750 Four, and then to a Yamaha 650 Maxim. The V4 would be new to me. My school of thought is that being "outdated" takes nothing away from a good machine. So, I already know and don't care that this model won't compare to modern bikes. Thanks.

Welcome to this cavern, filled with many with questionable sanity. I can't help you with your questions as I simply do not know. But someone will chime in soon enough and start the ball rolling for you.

The '84 VF1000F was one year only in the US so parts can be a little tough to find. It sold for many more years in Canada, Asia and Europe, going through a number of updates. The motor has chain driven cams, different than the gear driven cams of the '85-'86 VF1000R. But the R and F do share some common parts. If it has the lower fairing that's an aftermarket item, the OEM was a half faired bike. Like a lot of the Hondas check the charging system is ok and the gearbox, usually 2nd, is still ok. Wear items are still available, brakes, fork seals, etc. Tires are limited but there's options to upgrade to CBR F2/F3 wheels. I've had a couple of basket cases before but am looking for decent example I can make in to a streetable bike.

Here's a great example of what can be done with it. Big F Project - Earlier VFRs - VFR Discussion
