This week I picked up a copy of the Australian MCN. Its a pretty crap mag but with the headline of Blade Killer I did have a flick through to see a little more. Its mainly speculation but...

"Honda has applied for new trademark rights to use the name RVF on motorcycles, sparking speculation that the firm is to add a range-topping V4-engined sportsbike to its lineup...[]The implication is that it could be planning to create a production V-4 engined superbike, presumably based on the knowledge its gained with the RC212V MotoGP machine." END QUOTE

I dont think Im Robinson Crusoe in hoping Honda was going to go in this direction after seeing the new VFR. I mean I like it but a new sportier one..... hmmm I'll have mine in the Repsol Liveried Casey Stoner Signature edition thanks Honda...

    Cheers MGVFR

Dont think you will get to see a V5 as the new moto GP rules will outlaw a 1000cc V5 I think

The more reason Honda should use it in a street bike even if just a limited edition. 2012 VFR 1000 maybe

RVF could just as easily stand for Racing V Five. Either a four or five would be just fine with me. I've suspected, and very much hoped, that the VFR 1200 would be the beginning, rather than the end, of Hondas line of V4 sportbikes. They have the heritage and know-how to build V4 superbikes and it just doesn't make any sense for them not to do it. Especially with with the new BMW and Aprilia turning so many heads. Not to mention, a full production, Japanese V4, would totally set their bike apart from the other Japanese manufactorers, and V5 would set Honda apart from the rest of the world. They could potentialy keep cost down by going to full production, rather than following GP guidlines and building a more exclusive superbike. If it comes at the expense of shelving the CBR line in a couple of years, then so be it. If I knew that I could purchase a Honda V4, for say less than $14-$15,000usd, I would scrap my plans to purchase the RSV4 instantly.

Hope, hope, hope! Remember, after all, there did end up being some truth to the 7 gen rumors after Honda filed some patents on that machine.

I am going to show off some ignorance, but is a V5 possible? By definition, wouldn't have to be a V4 or a V6? Wouldn't 5 cylinders have to be an inline?

I doubt they would hang up the CBR. That appears to be their money maker.
I fear the VFR would get phased out and be replaced by the RVF; especially after the cool reception of the 1200.
Not that an RVF would be all that bad of a replacement.

It looks like a V4 set up but with an extra cylinder up front.

I guess I can't seem to wrap my head around the idea. Seems like it there would be alot of vibrations and hard to balance when you have 3 cylinders firing and 2 exhausting, then 3 exhausting with 2 firing for each revolution.

A great design really to use the 5th cyln to balance the engine thus eliminating the need for counter balance shaft ( or 2 ) as used in Kenny Roberts V-5 990

Triumph has the series of 3 cylinder engines. No major issues there.
It is kind of odd to think about odd numbers of cylinders, but they have it all worked out.

If Honda comes out with a US version of a V-4 or V-5, full bore sportbike. I would be adding it to my garage in a hearbeat! Which usually means it won't happen....lol
