Question: Is it normal for the RR to get quite hot on start up? Replaced RR with 06 GSX 750 RR as posts recommended as the better product. Suzuki RR had 7 wires instead of the Honda stock 5. One extra plus and one extra negative. Tied those off. Notice starter relay switch in front of battery burnt around red and red with white stripe wire connectors. Replace connectors. Not sure if that has anything to do with hot RR, or extra plus and minus wires might need to be spliced into main plus and minus wires. Thinking about adding fan or moving rectifier to front where horn is or back above wheel. If any members have notice theirs getting hot on startup, I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

I have heard people using a Yamaha R6 R/R. But I suppose a gixxer 750 one will work. As for it getting hot, it will, but not sure what is normal. I would check the wiring for high resistance as this wil make the r/r (and the wires) hotter than they would normally be.

hey mav; seems RR's get alot of attention here at VFR world. I am not sure if you went out and bought a new GSX750 regulator or you had it laying around, anyway Honda's replacement part RR has been considerably improved. I just replaced mine with a Honda OEM replacement unit. I believe Honda did their homework and there really isn't a need to get radical on a replacement unit. So I hope you got your unit straightened out, but if you dont ,I think Hondas new RR is a reliable unit. eddie

    Reply to hot RR

Hey Eddie! Thanks for the reply. I purchased the RR off ebay for $25. Compared to $160, I coudn't pass it up. According to other posts that I've read here even the new RRs are burning out. One rider said he'd rather go through a handful of $25 RRs off ebay instead of a handful of $160 RRs from honda. I'm going to search the internet and see if the temp is normal like a radiator or not. If I could have touch my old one before it blew I would've known. Still trying to troubleshoot why the starter relay switch fried at the connectors. Not sure if they fried as a result of the RR going out or if they fried and cause the RR to go as well. Not an electrition but I can trouble shoot though it may take me a long time. Thanks

hey Mav; I purchased my bike this Jan. and as far as I can tell the RR was the origional unit, The bike has 12k miles on it and when I tested it the stock RR worked fine. I read so many horror stories about RR's on this site , I figured
I better replace it with a new improved unit. In addition I also bought a little 12 volt cooling fan from Radio Shack,so I hope I did enough to eliminate any RR problems. I know my old RR ran pretty hot ,I started to check it pretty often because I really took what everyone said pretty seriously. Anyway
I never checked temps on my old RR, but it was hot enough to not be able to touch for more than a few seconds.Have you put a volt meter on your new RR to see if it is working? eddie

Much of the problem with the original R/R's is tied to the wiring Honda used, which was too small for the job, and the crimp connections creating more resistance over time. I found it best to upgrade the wiring.

A replacement R/R should have all wires used. Common the 2 negative(ground) wires together, as well as the two positive wires. Be sure if a sensor wire exists that it is getting battery voltage.

    When in doubt:

I have a plug and play harness I sell to fix 2000+ models, with other models supported(PM for details). This harness plugs into the factory harness, and provides an additional fused wire to the positive terminal for charging, plus a more reliable source for the sensor wire(where applicable). On those with a sensor wire there is an additional fused/relayed connection for extra low-amperage accessory wire.

On my bike this solved the overcharging problem, which was causing the 30 amp fuse assembly to burn up. 15.8-16.1 volts at 5K RPM before the fix, 14.45 volts after the fix.

PM if you are interested in one.

Mavrick, I think Eddie has the real solution....new updated Honda R/R PLUS the 12v Radio Shack fan. I finally put the fan on mine and so far, (gulp), no more problems. Like most people here, I hot wired it (with an inline 5 amp fuze) to the tail light. Only problem during installation was trying to figure out the wind direction of the fan, since it is not marked. Anybody here know the direction? There is a Radio Shack label that I put against the R/R. Get the fan! It's a lot cheaper than having to rent a trailer to go back and get your stranded bike (like I did).

I did the same wiring mod to Porshebob, but you really think the little fan is worth it? I had one but returned it to Radio Shack.

    Thanks!
