Just bought an 85 VF1000F from a local guy for quite cheap (for good reason  ). Anyway it needs some serious TLC; the obvious bodywork is in shambles with the side that sat facing the sun for years pretty much turned all white, and a bit of cracked damage in the bodywork.

I don't plan on a full restore of this bike, just cleaning the piss out of it and fixing some of the mechanical things, then using it as a second bike to play with .

I thought I would start with an oiling kit, seeing as how famous that problem is with these machines. Searching around there is a guy in Canada here selling one in local classiifieds (across the country from me).

V65 V45 Magna Sabre Interceptor Oil Mod Adaptor Kit - Moncton Motorcycle Parts, Accessories For Sale - Kijiji Moncton

My question is, the classifieds guys kit lacks a second oil line as compared to this kit:

    V4 Handa Oiling Kit

Is there a reason for the second line, do I need it or will the much cheaper kit do the job?

The single line kit should do the job just fine. Please be sure to check your oil pressure before and after . I am not a fan of this mod, lower end failures are all but impossible to repair and robbing oil from the crank does not sit well with me. I have seen many more rod bearing failures than cam failures on the VF1000.

Interesting to see someone against it, I haven't done that much research into it to see a counter point. The bike has about 52,000Km's on it (about 32,000 miles), which seems fairly low to me. The PO had the bike for 14 years, but it sat for the last several leading to the body work degradation.

Well if the cams on this motor are not as big of a concern as some make them out to be, I will probably leave it be.

    +1 to what TOE said.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your bike purchase.

There's plenty of reading on the oiling situation if you browse the 1st gen forum.

My feeling is, if you aren't going to race it or do some fancy complete restoration, then just leave it alone. Don't leave it idle for prolonged periods of time, use good oil and change it often. Ride it for a bit and see what you really have there before throwing money after an oiling kit. Who knows, you might decide you don't even like the bike and end up selling/trading it off in a couple months.

You probably would not congratulate me if you saw the thing. It is pretty rough looking. Good thing I have another bike and this is just a side project.

On that note, are the red stripping decals (it has the white/blue/red colour scheme) still available?

Everyone asks about the oil kit when they first show up (myself included)

I think there's a "sticky" thread at the top of the 1st gen forum about decals and body parts. I believe there's an aftermarket source for them. Someone will probably chime in, but I swear I've seen a thread on the topic if you search around a bit.

Love projects!! When I got my 500 it was a pickup load of parts and hadn't run for two previous owners. The price was cheap and it was all there cosmetically so I took it on and got her going. Get some pictures up if you can and keep us posted!

    Ya here they are:

CBdecals.com - Decal Kit Solutions for the old Big H Models

I think I will worry about some more important things on this machine before I drop $150 on some decals, but nice to know they are available.

Anybody have a link to the best thread on carb rebuilds? I have done some reading, but notice there is no FAQ on this forum that covers these types of topics (like all my questions and I am sure every other noob).
