Just got my bike home and wanted to make sure everything is done that should be so I have so far ordered a k&n filter, 4 ngk OEM plugs, oil filter and will be ordering a new chain, sprockets, and tires by summers end. She has 17,500 miles and any advice appreciated on other things I might want to look at or consider buying as well as recommendations of brands on the chain sprockets tires etc. One last question was about the kind of oil. Is it fine to use a good 10w40 made for cars or should I stick to an oil designed specifically for motorcycles?
Auto oil is fine: pick a good synthetic. Don't use any "high-mileage" oil, it has additives that are not good for low mile engines. Might as well order up a new R/R since you WILL be replacing it at some point. Order a new sub-filter also. Some of the guys on here have been having issues with theirs Change the fork oil at least. You could get new fork springs at the same time. Vortex sprockets/DID O-ring chain Stainless steel brake and clutch lines, This, with the new fluid, will make them much firmer. Flush the cooling system. I use Metzeler M3s now, which I think work well. Lots of optional mods too. Ebay is your friend.
Some good advice already. The fork oil is a must as most people neglect this. Do you know if the valve shim check was done at 16k? If not, it may be worth doing. Carb balancing is another to ensure clean vibration free riding. A word of caution about car oils. Some contain friction modifiers that will play havoc with your clutch causing it to slip. Make sure that you use 10W40 or 15W40 quality synthetic or semi synthetic oil to at least API SG and JASO MA.
I picked up a gallon of valvoline 4 stroke 10w40 with the jaso and wet clutch on it. I'll be heading to a dealer tomorrow to get a couple things along with the fork oil. I'll also see if I can get my hands on a manometer to sync the carbs. Thanks for the advice I never would have thought to do anything with the forks. I looked on ebay for bar ends weights and can only find them for 5th and 6th gen...do these fit 4th gen or are those hard to find?
