New owner of 86 VFR700. Looking for info and direction

Hello, I'm a proud new owner of a 1986 Interceptor VFR700F. This is my first bike and I'm not very fimiliar with this bike or any bikes for that matter. What do I need to know about these bikes? What are some common problem areas? What are some of the usual mods done to them? I'm not really looking to do anything to it right now but maybe in the future. I'm more of a car guy and very mechanically inclined, just on 4 wheels. My bike has 27,000 miles. What should I be looking at adjusting, replacing, looking at, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, links to sites for parts, decals, mods and things of that nature are greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone in advance and I hope to learn a lot.

I hear the rectifiers are a weak point. I am putting together a compatibility list so that should be ready soon. Also you may want to check out www.v4hondabbs.com lots of good info there.

 

Fiero, you sound like my clone :biggrin: My VFR is my third bike and I wanted to tinker with it right away too, coming from the much different world of car hot rodding...

That said, it being your first unless there's something strictly WRONG with it I would advise getting out there and doing some serious riding before you start tinkering with it. Screwing up some mod on a car can leave you by the side of the road... screwing up some mod on a bike can leave you by the side of the road laying in the ditch.

Now that the good advice is out of the way, lots of 91-94 CBR600F2 parts can be made to work on the VFR, apparently, and I myself am planning on swapping the forks, brakes, wheels, and possibly a Daugherty modified rear shock, all from the F2, onto my Viffer. There's other things I want to do as well but the brakes are horrid on this bike and doing the suspension/brakes/wheels is my first priority. Good luck with yours, and post some pictures.
